Weight Gain

Hi...I'M new to the forum, but have experience in owning and raising a Rottweiler. I have a 7 year old female, Raven has been in our lives since her birth, she is rather tall and lean and in great health. Raven is in great shape, very active, and has a great disposition. My concern and seeking some advice is that of late she has not been gaining any weight, and eating less, or she is extemely picky when she eats. Currently she is eating IAMs. There has been no signs of illness, unusual behavior, or problems. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good diet for weight gain or better brand of food.....I know usually the Rottie has the weight problem. Thanks

Post Re: Weight Gain

Not sure why you want her gaining weight? A 7 year old dog should be keeping her weight steady...not gaining weight.
Has she lost weight? Is she not eating as much as she used to?

First thing I would do is have her in to the vet's for a senior wellness check-up.
She should have a blood and urine work-up and then go from there.

If everything is good...then I would get her off of the Iams. It's a poor quality food that is overpriced.
Not sure where you are located in Canada, but even in most small towns you should be able to get some good quality food. If you have a Global or Pet Value or even feed stores sell the super premium foods.
Two choices that many members here are happy with are: Canidae All Natural, Human Grade, Holistic Pet Foods. Dog Food, Cat Food, Kitten Food, Dog Biscuits, & Canidae Platinum Diet and Innova www.naturapet.com
Go to the websites, and check out the store locators.

Re: Weight Gain

I agree, there are many superior foods. Please do a search and find something else. Also wondering, if she is healthy, active, and in great shape, what, exactly are you concerned about? Maybe more information is needed.

Re: Weight Gain

I definitely agree that a senior checkup is in order, and a change in food to something healthier than IAMS.

Is she losing weight, or, as you say it, not gaining weight? You don't want her to gain weight if she is lean, active and in good condition.

Lots of info on the premium foods here. You feed LESS of those types of foods, so even if the cost per bag is higher, the cost per meal is the same or less.

Re: Weight Gain

When both of my old guys reached 7 years, I did a senior blood panel to make sure all was well. It is just peace of mind because things can sneak up really fast.

It is really important to not let her gain too much weight at her age, in fact, if you can keep her on the light side, it is better for her.

If there are any kind of change in a senior dog, as you mentioned above, I would get her into the clinic ASAP because things happen and before you know it, you missed the boat.

Re: Weight Gain

Are you concerned of weight loss?? Or is she just not eating like you want her to?? I would look into getting some bloodwork done. There could be something underlying that you are not seeing anyother changes yet. How are her teeth??? Perhaps she is painful, arthritis? She does not have to be limping to be painful.
