Chicken Jerky Tenders????

I found a chicken jerky treat to give to Diva and it seems good. It's Waggin' Train Brand. Says its a "Premium Grade Chicken Fillet. I actually found it at Wal-Mart. Ingredients are Chicken Breast Fillet, and Seasonings. Its from a company called ADI Pet,Inc out of Rancho, Ca It says it's 97% Fat Free and High in Protein.

The Guaranted Analysis is:
Crude Protein- Min 70.0%
Crude Fat- Min 1.0% - Max 3.0%
Crude Fiber- Max 0.3%
Moisture- Max 14.0%
Salt- 0.3%

Seems like a good thing?!?!? What do you think? Diva loves it either way, but i want to monitor how much she gets, but wonder how "good" it really is. It says its takes 8Lbs of Chicken to make 2 Lbs of Jerky. Price was like 8 bucks for the 2 lbs.

Re: Chicken Jerky Tenders????

Call me silly, I would stick with making my own chicken jerky. (whole lot cheaper)

Re: Chicken Jerky Tenders????

Barry, do you mind sharing how you make your own chicken jerky? I'd prefer to make my own, also!

I buy the Cadet brand of these, and Chili is bonkers over them. She gets one in the morning before I leave and as soon as she hears me say "crate up", she's faster than the road runner getting to her "casbah".

Re: Chicken Jerky Tenders????

HI

I start out with free range chicken. I cut the breasts into strips. I place the strips in marinade for a few hours. I then set oven on 150 and slow cook till done. You can also buy comerical jerky kits from Cabelas.

Personally, I don't use any processed/extruded dog chow . My crew gets all homeade. Well semi homemade . I use Sojorner Farms for the base and add my own Raw meat and Vegetables (Had to put in my plug for Home preping food):)

Re: Chicken Jerky Tenders????

I agree with Barry, homemade is better. But seeing how I'm a bad mom, I opt for organic stuff, so I feel better about buying it!! that being said, Plato Smart treats make organic chicken as well as salmon strips that my dog goes balistic for!!! I usually break them into small pieces. Works great to distract her at the vets.

Making you own chicken jerky would be best and most cost effective. But to help answer the OP's question, one thing you want to look for is any artificial preservatives. If there aren't any, I would think they should be fine.

Re: Chicken Jerky Tenders????

I liked giving jerky treats when he was a puppy. Seemed like a safer chew, and actually lasted more than 30 seconds. I tried making my own, but it does take a lot of meat to make anythign more than little treats. $8 for 2 lbs of jerky doesn't seem like a lot of $$.

Re: Chicken Jerky Tenders????

Depending on what meat I am using to make jerky, one pound of raw meat or fish usually dries to between 1/3 and 1/2 pound of jerky. I cut 5 - 6 inch long strips about 1/4-1/2" thick. After it's dry, I wrap in a paper towel and put in freezer bags and keep in the fridge or freezer. They will last months this way.
Actually, they only last a couple days between the humans and animals in our household. <laugh>
What a great low-fat, high-protein snack! And it makes your house smell wonderful too.

Re: Chicken Jerky Tenders????

I get these great Chicken Jerky strips from Costco. Only ingredient is chicken breasts. 70% protein, 1% fat and low sodium. Marcino absolutely loves these and they last about a minute with him. A 2lb bag ran me up $15.00(CDN).
