Costco's Kirkland dog food???

Hello everyone. I have read some posts about this food, but I am not sure if it is worth trying. Now, my boys are on Innova, but it is a little pricey and they seem to be losing interest in it. I was wondering if some of the more experienced members can give advice as to whether I should even bother trying to switch to the Kirkland brand. I read the ingredients, and I was concerned that the 3rd ingredient was brown rice. There was also beet pulp in it. I have read that beet pulp is not good for them - is this true?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kelly

Brown rice isn't necessarily a bad thing as long as your dog isn't allergic to rice. Beet pulp as the #3 ingredient? That's a lot of filler you're paying for there.

If you search this site for "Kirkland" you will see that it is not the food for your dog.

Re: Costco's Kirkland dog food???

I don't understand why you’d want to bump down from feeding a premium food to one that isn’t.

In the long run, inexpensive food isn’t cheap. Because its ingredients are inferior, you have to feed more. Inexpensive food has fillers and other ingredients dogs can’t readily digest, so your dog can develop allergies and indications of irritation. Inexpensive can make you dog smell just plain bad.

How are your dogs losing interest in Innova? How old are they? Do you free feed?

Beet pulp is put into dog food as a cheap filler, not because it's good for your dog.

I think that nutrition and the health and life expectancy of your dog is very important.

You said that the food is pricey and that your dogs are "losing interest in it."

There are a ton of great dog foods, but unfortunately, they are all pricey.

The cheap dog foods are just that...cheap.

I currently spend $35 for a 40lbs bag of Canidae. The other "good foods" are all similarly priced.

Kirkland, as well as Pedigree are about $17 for a 40lbs bag.

This should be sounding alarms in our heads.

I was like you, but probably the expense and lack of education about proper dog foods, and I had my previous rottie on Pedigree. He died of cancer this year.

My current dog, Murphy, is on Canidae, after I read all the information about good versus cheap dog food.

I'm hooked and so is Murphy. BTW if he ever loses interest in Canidae, there are more good dog foods out there.

If you need more convincing, read this: Kirkland

Good luck,

Jeff

Kirkland is a step WAY down in quality from Innova. I do not understand why you would go down? The vet bills will go up, if you go down in quality.

If they are not as excited about eating Innova....try them on the Healthwise (made by Natura also). You could also go to another good quality food such as Canidae or just add a tablespoon of some canned dogfood. This often perks appetites up.

Kirkland is not a terrible food....there are alot worse foods . I would put it on the same level as Nutro Natural or ProPlan. When we go to Costco I see people buying 5-10 bags at a time...probably breeders feeding multiple dogs. If I had to feed 10 dogs, I maybe would feed Kirkland and add some extra meat and supplements.

Re: Costco's Kirkland dog food???

actually, if i am not mistaken, one of those kirkland diets(lamb and rice?signature diet) was in the whole dog journal list (top 20).
i personally have fed purina and eukanuba and have no problems with skin, gas, and are in good weights. as per age lived, rotts 10-12 yrs average and my mix lived to be a few months short of 17.

I've been getting the Whole Dog Journal for many years, and have the newest issue right infront of me....NO Kirkland food has ever made it on the list.

Re: Costco's Kirkland dog food???

Thanks to everyone for the replies....we will stick with Innova. I think I may try them on the EVO this time. Any thoughts on EVO vs EVO RM? Just curious.
