When is a good time to put my dog on supplements?

I have been giving my older dog human Flax seed oil, Cod/Halibut oil and a multivitamins to help with shedding and it seams to work she almost stop shedding and has a nice shinny smooth coat after only a few month on it. When can I start feeding this to my puppy this before her adult coat is in?

Re: When is a good time to put my dog on supplements?

Is it cod LIVER oil? Make sure its not, and check the EPA/DHA content.

I would not give the multi for the pup especially if your feeding a quality food. (You don't want too much fat soluble vitamins and calcium for pups.)

I'd DEFINATELY give the fish oil. The younger the better, they are growing so fast, and it helps with brain development, immune system, cell regeneration/growth etc... Give 1000 mg/day of combine EPA/DHA. SInce they grow so fast, I'd give glucosamine and chondroiten for her joints. Once she's 8-10 months, you can up this to 2000 mg/day.

I think it’s cod liver oil I’ll have to check when I get home.
Is it bad for them?
The lady that works with my Vet told me I could use it or Halibut/Salmon oils.

Salmon oil is fine...cod liver oil is not.
What food are you feeding your dogs?
If it's a really good quality food....there really is nothing you should be adding unless it is the salmon oil...and if you add salmon oil, then vitamin e should be given about 3 times per week.

Most good quality dog foods have all of the vitamins and minerals that are needed and more....unless your pup/dog is having physical problems it's better not to start adding.
Many dogs are allergic or sensitive to flax seed oil.

Re: When is a good time to put my dog on supplements?

I am feeding them both either Puppy chow but I usually get Purina Puppy Healthy star I believe it’s called. I put Jade-Da back on puppy food because Tea-Ka was not eating her food only Jade-Da’s and Jade-Da preferred the puppy food anyways.
The vet assistant suggested the Flax seed oil and Cod liver oil for her skin and to help with excessive shedding. To give Jade-Da 3 flax seed twice a day, 2 Cod twice a day and one Centrum performance once a day. It seemed to help her itchy skin and with in 2 months the shedding almost stopped.

Re: When is a good time to put my dog on supplements?

If I've learned nothing else from this site, it's that there are a lot of better foods out there instead of Purina. I initially switched mine to Canidae which is an All Life Stages food. I just switched them to Innova, but plan on adding at least one more food to the rotation.

Jade-Da's itching might have been related to food allergies.
