Any way to "de-smell" a crate?

I think Plato vomited in the middle of the night last night or something, cause his crate STINKS. I wiped it out with those antibacterial wipes, and then sprayed it with some spray and let it dry outside for like 3 hours. It still smells a little. Is there any way I can really clean it good that will be safe for him, aka not using bleach, lol.

"Nature's Miracle" I use it for carpet messes and general pet odor elimination. They sell it at most stores like wal-mart. Petsmart has it as well. I think it works great.

Is it possible that your dog is ill? I have never noticed a really stinky smell from my dogs vomit. I can't believe I just said that! I do know a surprising number of dogs who eat --- oh heck, let's just call it coprophagia!

OK I may be wrong here, but I don't see why you cannot use a weak bleach solution as long as you rinse very thoroughly.

I also agree about getting horrible smelling vomit checked out. Bear has thrown up often, but I have never noticed a particularly horrible smell, just the regular vomit smell.

Re: Any way to "de-smell" a crate?

Now that a day or so is passed. HE actually smells. He smells just like his crate now. It almost smells like a sour smell or something. He has been shedding alot lately as well, and I just figured it was because it was that time of the year or something, is there any connection to this?

Otherwise he is acting completely and totally normal. But I cannot get the smell out of the crate, and now its on him. I was going to give him a bath today, I hope that helps.

Re: Any way to "de-smell" a crate?

A trip to the vet may be in order. On another board there's a thread about an intestinal virus that's going around in dogs. The symptoms seem to include diarrhea and vomiting. I thought I saw a thread on here, but did a search and nothing came up.

Re: Any way to "de-smell" a crate?

It seems that this has turned into a vet issue, but...

Could it be his anal glands? Someone mentioned this to me, and if the fact that I had to mix his food(RM evo) for only one meal with another kind just to make up an appropriate portion size until my food order came in at the pet store has anything to do with it...could that be the problem?

I'm definitely no expert, but think that it should take more time than just one meal for anal glands to become a problem.

Re: Any way to "de-smell" a crate?

Well I gave him a bath and threw out his collar. I am going to wash his crate(s) with bleach very diluted in water later on. He seems to smell fine now, just like a wet dog. This is so strange I have no idea how he got so smelly.

Re: Any way to "de-smell" a crate?

Is it kind of a fishy smell? Is he licking his butt lately?

Re: Any way to "de-smell" a crate?

Maybe fishy, I don't really know what to call it. And no he never licks his butt, but he licks himself(male) all the time. Every says this is just because he is intact though. I bathed him and the smell seems to be gone, and I washed his crate(s) with some heavily diluted bleach. I hope it does the trick.

Re: Any way to "de-smell" a crate?

One part vinegar (white or cider) to four parts water should eliminate the odor.

Well if the smell comes back soon, it may be leaky anal glands. Thats why I was asking if he licks his butt, but he may not lick it, he may scoot his butt instead (ewwwww, I know).
