Re: Shampoo???

I cant really recommend any brands in particular, but I use Perfect Coat on my dog, he is an akita mix tho, not a rottie.

I will say if she's still a pup, definately a puppy shampoo, and if she is a dog with sensative skin, keep it hypo-allergenic, otherwise it irrates the skin and she may have an alergic reaction.

Re: Shampoo???

I use Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo on Kahlua it doesn't irritate her or make her skin dry. She also smells soooo good afterwards I have to snuggle with her for a long time:)

Re: Shampoo???

haha thats good to know...because human shampoo would definately smell much better...i was just worried about dry/irritated skin...so not having to worry about that is a plus

Re: Shampoo???

Don't use human shampoo, the pH is not correctly balanced for a dog's skin. Most dog shampoos are pretty equal, just remember to dilute it, that makes it easier to rinse and (nonmedicated) shampoos don't need to be used full-strength. I'm a former dog groomer.

Re: Shampoo???

Now I question my vet, he's the one who told me to use it when she was having a a lot of hot spots and dry flaky skin. She has never had a problem with her skin since I started using it.

Re: Shampoo???

I am a bather at a grooming shop...we use all nature's specialty products... I use Plum Silky mixed with the Re-Moisturizer in the hydrosurge for daisy. We do use the Johnson's baby at the Kuvasz kennel, but just for faces.

Re: Shampoo???

hmmm...this is all pretty interesting and thanks for the input...i have heard that human shampoos are more harsh and that they could result in dry skin...but am unsure of the truth in this...i guess everyones opinion varies

How often are you bathing your dog? Rotties aren't a breed requiring many baths with shampoo in my experience.

Did your vet ask you what you're feeding? Hot spots, chewing and gnawing on feet and other body parts, and chronic ear infections spring to mind as indicators the dog may be allergic to something in its diet.

Re: Shampoo???

She's not bathed very often probably 3-4 times a year. If she gets real muddy from playing outside I'll usually just rinse her down in the shower with no soap. We were feeding her Nutro Ultra at the time (now she eats Canidae) he didn't think her food was the problem, and suggested that we use Johnson & Johnson instead of the shampoo we were using from Pet Smart, I don't remember the name of it. He put her on prednisone and she hasn't had a problem since.

Re: Shampoo???

Gunner does not get baths often. When he was a puppy, we used a fragrance and dye free shampoo by Groomax. Now we use The Black Pearl (Perfect Coat I think) If you do bathe too much it can irritate there skin. When Gunner gets dirty, I rinse him outside since it is warm-and use the shedding blade to "squeeze" excess water out of his coat. Regular brushings with the shedding blade are usually all that is needed for maintence of your Rott's coat. That is also a good way of checking for ticks (if you are in a tick area) and other "stuff".

Re: Shampoo???

Bella doesn't get a bath that regularly, mainly after she's rolled in something nasty.

We've been using Perfect Coat's Gentle Hypoallergenic shampoo. It seems to get her clean and it claims to not have perfumes or dyes. Her skin and coat are in decent shape so this shampoo works for us.

Re: Shampoo???

My vet reccomends using an oatmeal based dog shampoo. We live in the dessert and it can be very drying.

Good suggestion! Pure Pet makes a good oatmeal-based shampoo, and so does Lambert-Kay. My absolute favorite, non-oatmeal dog shampoo is the Lambert-Kay Fresh n' Clean. The fragrance lasts for weeks after bathing.
