help with gas!!!!

I have my 16 wk Brutus on Innova Lg Breed puppy and he has been getting terrible, silent-but-deadly, clear a room in 10 seconds- bad gas!! could it be the food? i started him on iams lg breed puppy at 8 weeks and it did the same thing- vet told me to switch to Innova about 6 weeks ago ( i did it gradually like i was supposed to) and its really not doing anything.. could i just have a gassy pup, or should i get it checked out??

Re: help with gas!!!!

You might try giving him a tablespoon of yogurt with each meal. Make sure it has the live cultures in it, use a good brand.

Re: help with gas!!!!

Yep, a dollop of plain yogurt at each meal. You will notice the difference almost immediately. Daisy is nearly six years old and still gets her "gas-be-gone" yogurt at every meal.

Re: help with gas!!!!

Compare the ingredients lists for both foods (the Innova is a GREAT food, the Iams is a lousy food, but there are probably ingredients in common between them, like chicken), odds are there's something in both foods that your dog can't handle. While yoghurt can help and is certainly good for dogs, if your dog can't handle a given ingredient (which is what is most likely when it comes to gas), I don't see much point in trying to address the symptom rather than the problem. Find a food which doesn't have whatever the common ingredient is (it's usually a meat protein or corn or wheat, but I know Innova has no corn or wheat, so odds are it's the meat protein), and see if that helps the gas. The best food in the world is no good if your dog can't handle one of the ingredients in it.

Re: help with gas!!!!

the yogurt seriously works. Oscar got the gas on Innova as well and I gave him a couple good dollops of organic plain yogurt (full fat) every day. If I forgot, I was soon reminded! hahaha!

Re: help with gas!!!!

The innova large breed puppy does have grains in it - it is not the same as the EVO. I would not feed a large breed food to my dog as it is a gimmick and has more fillers in it than normal puppy food.
I had my boy on Innova EVO till he was 8 months old, now he is on Canidae.
They are both a life-stages food meaning you can feed it from puppy to senior.
And the yogurt will help, but if it is the food, and I'm sure that others will chime in here - then I would maybe get him off the large breed formula.JMHO

Ditto...this is my experience anyway. My 6 mo girl has tried Canidae and Innova and both build up the gas to the point that she throws up the food and can't handle anything for about 12 hours. Per vet the food was creating serious gas build-ups in her system (she wasn't able to release it)...so we are now trying Flint River Ranch fish and potato. Hope this one works and good luck to you also!

Re: help with gas!!!!

Just wanted to chime in here, my 5.5 month old had been given Iams LB until we got him and switched to Nutro Ultra (it's relatively new, holistic) and the gas completely disappeared. No yogurt needed. He only seems to get smelly when he's had a few too many goodies

Or when we're conveniently in the car!

Re: help with gas!!!!

One message from England. After trying all different foods for 17 years of rottweiler ownership, I have gone natural with meat & veg plus Deans mixer biscuits. Brewers yeast, SA37, Seaweed powder, of course a bit of live yoghurt. I have wonderful shiny coats, less moulting and definitely NO gas.

I guess I'm not the only one with the deadly problem! The Rotties I owned, they had deadly weapons of mass destruction However, from reading this forum I have learned a lot! Thanks!!

To Bleh60. Must be "live" yoghurt and natural is best, although the fruit types wouldn't do any harm - correct me anyone if I am wrong.
