Re: Need help determining what to feed my pup

Here are some of the foods I commonly see recommended: Canidae, Innova, California Natural, Wellness. You can also do a search on here to see what some of the feedback has been.

We switched to Canidae all stages about a month ago from Nutro. I already notice a difference her coat looks a lot better, she eats less, and her gas has significantly improved! She used to clear out the rooms. LOL!

Re: Need help determining what to feed my pup

I have a 2 month old rottie and I am feeling overwhelmed by the information on food; the gentleman at petsmart recommended something from purina, proplan, the vet recommended science diet; then I see the articles on the site. I am not sure which way to go

What foods are available to you Pixx? That may help us to recommend one better.

Re: Need help determining what to feed my pup

I would definitely stick with a super premium brand. Do a search on here, and you'll come up with a list.

Some of the brands that come to mind are:

Canidae, Innove, Flint River, Solid Gold, California Natural, Nutro Ultra, etc.

In general, vets don't know a whole lot about nutrition.

You probably wont find anything worth its grits at petco/ petsmart. The best you can get there would probably be like Natrual Balance or Royal Canin.....
And your vet makes plenty of money by suggesting you use Science Diet..... I would not suggest it.

Re: Need help determining what to feed my pup

thank you guys very much; this forum has been a tremendous help for me as a new owner of a rottie. I have found a store that sells the Canidae; I may go with it; how can i discover what ingredients I should look for regardless of the
brand or food I select

You can do a search on the forums and you'll find a lot of info or you can take a look at the Whole Dog Journal. Alternatively, here's a link another member (sorry I can't remember which one) provided in another thread. It lists the "good" foods and tells a little bit why.

Why would you add rice to a kibble that already has it? Your dog has no need for carbohydrates, I'd try to keep them as low as possible.

Re: Need help determining what to feed my pup

Regarding feeding..........have any of you heard that it is a good idea to change the type of protein/food occasionally to prevent food allergies? I was told that by a trainer. My Vet. had always said NOT to change foods. Any feedback? I have been changing foods and my dogs have had no problem with this. Thanks.
