Please, please do not give your puppy rawhide. It can swell up in the intestines and cause untold grief. Raw bones, chicken necks, flavored bones, pigs ears, all ok, but not rawhide.

Another big problem is that a lot of rotties will chew off big pieces and swallow them. This can lead to choking. I don't recommend anyone ever feed their dog rawhide. The risks really are too great, and the benefits pretty minimal.

When I first got Zilla, a friend gave her a rawhide bone. First off, big waste of money. A Rottie will finish one in 5 seconds flat. Secondly, after she got it nice and gooey, she swallowed it whole and began choking on it. Thank goodness the Heimlich maneuver works on dogs also! Personally, my dogs will never have rawhide again.

Booda Velvets are expensive, But are totally digestible and a safe alternative to rawhides. Our Rottweiler's Kozmo and Elroy love the XL ones. They come in 3 flavors, Chicken, Beef, or Mixed.

Strange this has come up tonight! I just received a phone call from a puppy owner. In general discussion "RAWHIDE BONES" was mentioned......I cringe....NO-NO-NO !! Never give a pup rawhide chews. I think I'll change my puppy contracts to include the same message.

There are lots of bad things for dogs on the "pet food and treats" market. The reason is because basically there is no regulation in this area. Besides choking, a danger of rawhide is that many are made overseas. In many countries, there are no standards for the way hides are processed and many dangerous chemicals are used.

All my dogs chew rawhide....didn't know it was bad for them. When Rocky was a pup, I'd hold the rawhide and he'd chew away. I've bought them everything else on the market and it just sits...they won't touch it. They occassionally get pigs ears, "Meaty Bones", but that's about it. I guess we're fortunate they haven't choked to death, or had intestinal problems. If it's so bad, why is it still on the market?

The puppy owner just called. The vet trip was for update with shots. In checking the stool, sure enough undigested pieces of the rawhide. The pup had vomited the day before as well. Again...please no rawhide!
