weight

My rottie will be 5 mths old on January 11th and my question is...What is a typical weight for that age? He is 40-43lbs now. I am not concerned that he is underweight, it's just that I want to know if now is a good time to switch him to adult food. I've heard 4-6 mths is a good time to switch but only if the dog is at a healthy weight. I know my dog is healthy, but I don't want to switch him too early. Anyone who knows a general weight that it is acceptable to switch foods at, please let me know. Thanks, Sarah

I think it depends more on general condition, growth rate, and appetite - if your pup's growing slowly and doesn't have a big appetite there's no reason yet to switch foods. If he's growing fast and is big boned and has a big appetite you'd probably want to switch him over slowly to adult food. This is a generalization but maybe will give you some idea of when/why to switch.

A good "rule of thumb" is 10 pounds per month up to about 80 pounds. Regardless of when pups reach 80 pounds, they tend to seriously slow their growth about this time and don't put on their final 10 pounds or so until around age 2-3 years.

Remember that some pups will be slighly heavier than the 10 pounds/month, and some will be lighter. Rather than worrying about the scale, check to make sure your puppy is lean, but not skinny, and muscular. If this is true, then your puppy is the perfect weight.

Remember that bigger isn't better, and certainly NOT in puppies! Slow growth is better for your puppy's bones and muscles.

My ZEKE is also 5 months now, and I just had him to the Vet for another check up and Rabies shot. He weighed exactly 45 pounds and the Vet said he was in perfect health/shape. Hope this helps.
