how long between eating and exercise? What is the recommended amount of time to wait after feeding to commence moderate exercise in morning, and how long to wait after exercise in evening to provide dinner? In AM, Ike goes out to potty, then eats breakfast, then lays around for about 30 minutes, while I get showered etc., and then gets 45 minutes exercise - either play in yard, long walk on road, or hike in woods. Is 30 minutes long enough to wait between feeding and this type of exercise? In PM, Ike gets played with in yard to burn off energy from being in pen all day. Sometimes this is pretty vigorous running around, fetch, etc. THen I make him lay quietly and wait til his breathing seems normal before feeding him. Is there a time guideline you can suggest - 30 minutes? more? Thanks!

k&s: I make the dogs wait *at least* 1-1/2 hours after feeding before engaging in vigorous exercise. You can feed Ike when his breathing returns to normal. What about switching your morning routine so that you feed him afer the am exercise??

Everything I've read recommends no vigorous exercise within an hour each side of feeding. If your dog is just walking on a leash, 45 minutes probably won't hurt him, but if he's off leash, running and jumping, I'd wait the full hour or a bit longer to be safe.

I'll wait longer after vigorous exercise in evening, and stick with moderate exercise (walks, hikes) in am. I could try feeding him after exercise in am, but he seems to be hungry in morning and I don't want to make the walks unpleasant due to hunger. Also, it's kind of nice feeding him while I have my coffee (which *I* need before the walks! LOL, and then he gets to rest for a while before our walk. I'll make sure the am walk is only moderate from now on. He mostly needs the vigorous exercise in the evening after being in the pen all day, and that's when there's more time flexibility to wait longer for his dinner.

I try to exercise first, let cool down, then feed. 30 minutes minimum before exercising should be fine as long as it is not to hot out and the exercise is not to rigorous.
