Dog food Question

I am wondering which dog food do you people prefer, Canidae or Royal Canine, I am currently feeding Nutro and his coat is not looking to good. Also, I am giving him Omega 3 capsules daily.

Re: Dog food Question

man, it seems like everyones rottie has a dry coat. well by no means am I an expert. But, based on all the conversations i have read here. I can tell you that one is not really better than the other. Your dog may not do as good as our dogs with a certain type of food. Canidae seems to be very popular though. My dog has the same problems. I am going to start him on flaxseed oil and salmon pills. Also if you brush his coat once a day like i have it will help a bit, it wont cure the problem but it will help. good luck with your pup

Canidae has much better ingredients that Royal Canin. Try the Canidae and add about 2000 mgs of wild salmon oil per day if there are still problems with dry skin.

Since you are feeding Nutro now, you will have to feed less Canidae...it has more calories per cup and less grain.

Re: Dog food Question

I'm having the same issues with the dry skin. I feed Elsa Royal Canin. Later this week I'll be changing her food over to Innova's Evo.

So what I'm saying is, Royal Canin doesnt seem to be preventing the problem for Elsa.

Re: Dog food Question

I went to the sho yesterday andn she gave me different samples of foods; so, I tested a few of them and he does not like canidae, he loves Hollistic gold. He eats it like a treat. Has anyone had problems with this food?

I feed my Rottie Eukanuba Lamb & Rice. His coat is sooo soft and luxurious and he hasn't had any allergy problems. He had some before this food but after, he has looked and felt perfect!

Re: Dog food Question

Eukanuba is not a premium food, it's basically the same as Iams only sold at the vets office. That's great if yur dog has had no allergies since being on that food, but think of it this way. Just because you have no allergy's eating mcdonalds or kraft dinner everyday would you? Or would you prefer to eat roast beef or turkey?
It's the same when choosing a food for your dog.

Re: Dog food Question

I just switched Elsa to Innova's Evo. I've never seen her eat like this. In the past she just nibbled at her food. Now she's eating like she's never tasted good food before. Guess she never really did.

Re: Dog food Question

In the summer her coat was really nice. But since the winter time, she's had dandriff. She's only been on Evo for a couple of days, but I haven't noticed any flakes on her coat. And it looks very shinny. However, she's having very running stools. I'm hoping she'll adjust soon.

Re: Dog food Question

I just thought I would let you know, I feed my dog Costco brand (kirkland) Lamb and Rice. The vet has NO problem with that at all, and he NEVER gets a dry coat. I know most people prefer vet food, but my dog LOVES this food. Good luck!

You might want to read this thread. Diamond makes the Costco Kirkland brand & they have been having issues with toxic food & contamination.

First let me say that if your dog does well on it, that's what really matters. However, vets are not nutritionists, and most vets spend almost no time learning about nutrition and do not place much of an emphasis on it at all in their continuing education, I trust my vet about medical matters, and I trust people who have studied dog foods and dog nutrition out of their own interest about dog foods and nutrition. Heck, many vets still sell and recommend Science Diet, which is a horrible-quality food, so no, almost nobody here prefers "vet food", most of us who are "food snobs" prefer super-premium foods, most of which are not available through vets, but through smaller pet food stores.
