How Long for Fur to Grow Back

Maddie's rear leg has been shaved completely all the way up to her tail. It was shaved in prep. for a surgery she didn't end up needing (luckily)...

I was wondering how long might it be before her leg looks somewhat normal again (i.e. black and not looking like a poodle!). I realize it may be 2-3 months at least before it's full length again, but I was hoping it might be less obvious in about 3-4 weeks????

Yes, it will look much less obvious in 3-4 weeks. Most surgical shavings that we have had done on our dogs are almost grown back in fully within 5-6 weeks.

The rear feathers will take the longest to re-grow.

Oh yeah... forgot all about those... it will look a bit silly I suppose, but that's okay!

You'd think w/ the way they shaved her down that she was going to have the entire leg replaced or something????

Wow! You guys had rapid fur regrowth! After Charleigh's 1st TPLO (in Nov), after a month or so she barely had more than stubble. You could still see a line on her hip up til about 4-5 months. Oddly enough, she had faster regrowth with the one that was done in March, but not much faster. I think it has to do with where the life cycle of the follicle is when it's shaved. Also Charleigh's legs were shaved to the point they were smooth as a baby's bottom.

Toby had his head and half his body shaved after an enormous abcess crept under his skin and then burst.
It took about six weeks to look normal.
We nicknamed him the "Andalusian Pus-Hound."
Boy, was he ever ugly with a shaved head.Nobody would touch him.("cept his mummy of course)

Re: How Long for Fur to Grow Back

It took Tank's almost a complete shed cycle to be un-noticeable, but he also has a very flat coat. We just told everyone it was his cool fade haircut....

Re: How Long for Fur to Grow Back

Update... Well I think FlyBallMom had the best answer. It has now been over 6 weeks and Maddie has very little sign of hair growth. She has stubble (like a 5 o'clock shadow) but nothing close to looking normal... Lucky for her she's not a show dog... but it is getting cold out and I"m sure her tushy would prefer to be wamer!!!

Re: How Long for Fur to Grow Back

Sometimes it does depend on their shed cycle...I have a rottie who took months to regrow hair after she had her front legs shaved for IV placement.

hmmmm.... I know about Maddie's heat cycle, but not her 'shed' cycle. She actually doesn't have much of an undercoat and doesn't shed 2X per year (just some sheding prior to heat cycle... which is just top coat all over the place)...

Maybe I should look for some hair growth products... :)

Seriously, it's not a big deal... the bigger deal is that her knee heals (strained ligament not torn) and she's back to 'normal' sometime in the next couple months...
