Thumbs up Cost of Innova?!

I'm going to be switching Oscar over from Nutro Natural L.B. Puppy to Innova L.B. Puppy food. My other choice was Canidae but after speaking with the feed store lady she advised me that for a Rottweiler puppy, I'd be better off going Innova. This store didn't even sell Innova and she was recommending it so she had nothing to gain whatsoever. She said Canidae is an excellent food but that for a growing puppy the Innova L.B. was superior.

Anyways....I called the local store that sells it (only 1 here) and they want $65.00 cdn for a large bag of the Innova LB Puppy. Is that an average price?

Is a $30 difference between Nutro Natural and Innova normal or is this store charging too much?

Uuuuuuh, Oscar at 15 weeks eats 5 cups per day. He BETTER be eating less of it at that price. Jeesh! haha

I just priced out Innova today and the big bag here was just over $50 (EVO a bit more).
If you keep reading here you will see that most will not reccomend a LB puppy food that it is better to just feed the adult formulas. So Canidae would be just fine for your pup.

The Innova is more $ than Nutro because it has better ingredients and yes you will feed far less!

Not even the Innova LB Puppy?! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaH!
My head is spinning at choosing a stinking food! This is why I've spent 2+ weeks changing my mind, re-evaluating and putting off the food switch. Everyone has such different opinions and preferences. My vet totally pushes for the LB dog foods, the feed store lady does as well, posters on here don't agree etc, etc, etc.

I think I'm going crazy! If I read another dog food ingredients label I'll die. haha! This poor pup is never going to get a food change at this rate.

$50! Niiiiiiiiiice. I found a store that is the town my dh works in (so convenient) and they're $59. So better then $65 before taxes. $6 bucks is $6!

NO taxes!

That's it! I'm driving up to Campbell River! haha!

Mocha- What about the Innova Puppy (not L.B.)? Or would you recommend skipping puppy all together and going to EVO or Innova dog food??

It's a tough choice, but keep in mind that you aren't switching permanently! Just start with one bag of something you think is good (my pup switched to Canidae around 13 weeks), feed it and see how it goes. If Oscar likes it and is doing well, stick with it. If not, or if you decide it's too pricy, change it. I rotate Bailey's foods, so he gets a bag of Canidae, then some Wellness, then maybe a bag of Chicken Soup because it's quite a bit cheaper here. I think rotating food has plenty of benefits, and being able to save some money occasionally is great for me.

Go with the Innova Adult...you really don't need a large breed food (remember a Rott is really a "medium large" breed dog).

The large breed foods are lower in kcal, so you'll actually end up feeding him more food, therefore buying food more often.

Large Breed Puppy 366 kcal/cup
Large Breed Adult 350 kcal/cup
Adult 557 kcal/cup

PS, I spend $40.99 for a 28.6# bag of EVO

EVO is very high in protein (42% compared to the 24% in regular Adult) Calorie intake is comparable (537). Natura Pet does not recommend EVO be feed to puppies because the average pet owner will overfeed, causing health problems (overweight puppies, growing to fast, etc.). Many members here feed EVO with no problems, though, me included.

I've always paid about $60.00 for a large bag of dogfood....That includes Nutro and Wellness and Solid Gold.
I like Wellness Fish and Potato b/c for some reason I just like the thought of a dog getting it's protein from fish...

Happy hunting! Choosing a food will drive you nuts.

I would also suggest you go with the Adult Innova or Canidae. I raised my pup Baxter on Canidae and he did great. Nice slow, steady growth , gaining about 10 lbs a month. He never ate more then 3 cups total of food per day.
Now that he is almost 17 months he is only eating 2 cups per day.
Many forum members here have raised pups on these foods...I think we can give you more information then the lady at the petfood store that has never had the food in her store or raised a Rott puppy on it.

I just bought a bag of Innova Adult and paid $62.99 ( not including taxes)...I switch my dogs back and forth. A couple of months on Canidae and then a couple of months on Innova Adult, etc.

Give a good quality food a try...I know that you will be happy with the change.

Gina

I started my boy on Canidae at 4-5 months, then switched to EVO at 7-8 months and he's been on it since except for this past few weeks where I had to buy a bag of Canidae and he's now approaching his 11th month of life. He gets 2 cups of Canidae or EVO per day. When he was younger, he was closer to 3 cups, but I don't always go by the recommended amount. I just judge how much he should get based on how he looks.

As long as you don't over feed your dog, an adult food is just fine. As others have said, just don't let your dog grow too fast.

I pay about $40 (largest bag) for Canidae which includes the shipping charge because no store around here has ever heard of it. For EVO, I pay about $45 (biggest bag) through a cat clinic (of all places).

Here's a pretty good article about protein levels and puppies:
