Food with Rabbit or Duck

I just got off the phone with my vet and seeing as Diesel has been vomitting for the past week, we have decided to change his food. She recommended a food with rabbit of duck. I'm in the middle of some searches right now, but if anyone has any recommendations, that would be great! He needs a food with one protein source.

My vet also mentioned BARF diet! I couldn't believe it. She said she knows a lot of dogs with severe allergies who have excelled on BARF! (the vet techs were looking at her like she was crazy talking about BARF!)

Have I mentioned before how happy I am with our vet??? They are so helpful and don't try to push all kinds of things on us.

I believe that Wellness has some duck/potatoe formulas.......if it's not Wellness, it's somebody...(Gee, that's a helpful statement, eh?!) I've seen the bags at the store. Since it tends to be more expensive and I haven't had the need for it, I haven't tried it on my own dogs.

I also know you can get cans of food by one of the high end companies that are single protein source.

Last I looked, Natural Balance had a duck formula - and a venison, if that matters.

Wellness has a venison formula - that I am positive of. They also have a Whitefish formula. Duck, I don't think they do.

Wellness definitly has a duck food so I think I might go get a small bag of that. He's been eating Pinnacle trout and sweet potato for the past 8 months or so and been fine until now. Prior to that he had a venison rx diet which he tolerated for about 2 months. Pinnacle (according to their website) has a duck and potato coming June 2005. Will call my local training center which sells Pinnacle to see if they will be getting that in.

Thanks!

I can't comment on the comparison, but I know my Petco carries the Natural Balance line, and one nice plus is they have a buy 10 bags, get one free thing for PALS members....
I know the Natural Balance line seems to have gotten good reviews here. My boys are doing well with it.

Wellness has a line called 'Simple Food Solutions" available in either Duck or Venison formula. Here is a link ---> Wellness

I priced it out and the venison is pricier than the duck formula, at least here in CT...

I picked up a bag of the Natural Balance duck and potato. We have a new Petco close to home so I went there. Hoping to switch Roxy over to this food as well. She's been eating Canidae for a while now, but has become very gassy lately.

Now I'm waiting on my vet to call back again to see if she recommends weaning Diesel off his current food, which seems to be making him sick, fast for 24 hours, or just switch. I hope not fasting as he always vomits bile when he doesnt eat.

The dogs just ate their dinner. We mixed Diesel's and gave Roxy a half scoop. Diesel was looking at his food, like what's this, it's a different shape. But then he ate all of it and licked his chops after. Roxy left a little of her Canidae in her bowl and then she went back and finished it, then proceeded to lick Diesel's bowl clean! Something she never does! I think she wants a change in her diet.

I hope this works for my boy!!!

Merrick carries a food with duck.

Although my dog had a problem with processing the freeze dried peices of vegetables in the Merrick.

Wink Rabbits

I am so glad I saw your story about your vet saying that rabbit is good for your dog. My Bubba-Ann hasn't been eating as much of her food lately (a very good vet recommended high energy brand) but she has been eating lots of rabbits and a few squirrels. We live on a farm and have woods and fields. She never had been fat. She always has been slender. Her coat shines and the only problem is she keeps her ears scratched up from chasing them. Our vet has me give her a Vitamin B shot about every six weeks but other than her heartworm preventative and Frontline that is all the medications she gets. She is a very happy, loving, people oriented girl who is extremely smart. I had to put two locks on the goat's pen because Bubba-Ann would open the gate and let her out. Then they would go on trips to the woods. I do let the goat out when I'm home during the day but don't won't her out when I am not here even though Bubba-Ann takes good care of her.
