Re: Snow flakes

Flaxseed oil. The refrigerated kind. I give 1 tablespoon with the kibble daily for a 84 pound dog.

Instead of adding all sorts of things to the dogs kibble...I would suggest you get your dog on a better quality kibble.

Re: Dandruff

my maxine did not do well with flax oil, it made her even more flakey. since then i have read that many dogs do not tolerate it well. i have also read that it can be harmful to give a dog avocado... but this does not include avocado oil. (try a google on dogs+avocado and you can read all about it) i would advise against feeding bacon grease; cooked animal fat is bad for dogs. raw egg is controversial as well, raw egg whites deplete the body of biotin... but the yolks contain a high amount of biotin that should make up for what the white "takes away". still, some sources will tell you never to feed raw egg because of this. when i was feeding commercial dogfood i substituted one meal per week with a can of jack mackerel or sardines or canned salmon and this kept my dogs coat healthy.

and in addition to all of that, i think brunie's mom is on to something.... are you feeding your dog a good quality kibble? i would switch to a high quality kibble before trying any additional foods or suppliments.

Re: Dandruff

Like eveyrone else said I would look into switching kibble. When we adopted Happy they had him on Pro-Plan and he was dull and flaky..a few weeks of Chicken Soup..and his coat is like glass. All 3 of my dogs are super shiney and I don't use suppliments.

Re: Dandruff

We switched from Nutro Max to Bil Jac and Hunter's coat has never been more soft and shiny. He also gets a half teaspoon, twice a day, of salmon oil. And, we've learned that our Hunter is quite the vegatarian -- loves all sorts of veggies.

Stop saying my lines before I do!

Yep. Before you spend money on supplements, perhaps look into spending that money on better kibble. Healthy dogs on a high-quality kibble which agrees with them almost always have good skin and shiny coats.

Re: Dandruff

How old is your pup? How long did you feed chicken soup? How long have you been feeding nutro?

It took about a month and a 1/2 to see the difference in Happy's coat. I personally prefer the chicken soup over the nutro.

You might also want to give your guy a brushing daily with a soft brush to help distribute the natural oils in the skin. I wouldn't bathe him often either but if you have to use a gentle puppy shampoo.

Re: Dandruff

I feed Natures Variety...it is costly but worth it. It is all natural and comes in four different meats (beef, chicken, lamb and venison) This brand also has beef patties that you can purchase too. Yogi gets one beef pattie in the morning with her kibble everyday - the beef pattie has ground up bone and lots of veggies too. The only downfall is this brand is harder to find - I buy it at a natural food pet food store in my area but you may not have one close to you and I have never seen it at any of the chain stores.

Re: Dandruff

Good day!
My Jayde had a problem with dry skin and I was recommended by a friend to try Beverly Sasson lusterizing leave in conditioner spray, it's an all natural spray. Along with and egg in her food once in awhile. Her coat is shiney and no more dry skin.. Good luck!

I have used an omega 369 fatty acid supplement on Bessie since she was about 3 months old. I have never skipped a day in her life so far. She is now almost 2 years old and not only has she always had a glossy coat but she doesn't shed. The newest studies now show that another benefit to the EFA supplement is cartilage health and regeneration as dogs age. The one I use has Borage seed oil, Fish oil, Vitamin E and Flaxseed oil. Its in capsule form and Bessie takes it fine with peanut butter although you can puncture the capsules and squirt onto the food. You can get this from a vet type company, I use Vetriscience brand or even get a human form at any health food store and convert the dose for your dog. I get compliments on her coat all the time!

If you have switched foods less then a month or so I would wait and see. You can also give one egg once every week or two. The eggs work for us they make there coat nice and shiney. o you have him on any flea preventive?? They can also cause dry flaky skin
