Meaty bones and Age

Hello everyone,

I was woundering at what age is it ok to start giving meaty bones?

My dog did not start getting meaty bones until she was 10 months old (but that was just a personal decision on our part)....I am not sure there are any major age related reasons why not, but I am sure that someone with more knowledge about this will answer your question :)

No real knowledge here..but Rocco is 4 1/2 mos and I gave him his first marrow bone yesterday :)

I'd just say that when you start a pup, it probably isn't a good idea to give them small bones. Dogs have the habit of 'inhaling' their food, don't want them trying to inhale a chicken bone ;)

Are you speaking of 'recreational' bones; like a marrow or knuckle bone?
If so, I don't see why a pup couldn't do a bit of gnawing on one, but only under supervision. Remember that these are weight-bearing bones, they're hard, and giving them too often could result in tooth wear and/or fractures.
This could be problematic for a voracious adult chewer.

"Meaty" bones is a term used by those that feed raw. The "meaty" bones
are intended for ingestion. They are softer, and are generally fed as 1 of the meals that comprise the raw diet. These types of ingestible bones could include chicken frames and other meaty chicken bones, lamb riblets, pork necks, ribs, etc.
