Change in Canidae?

I know there are a lot of Canidae feeders here .. most of our adoptive and foster homes feed it .. we have been hearing some feedback recently that makes me wonder if there is either a bad "batch" out there or if the formula has changed.

Several dogs have become sick on it .. in fact one distributer in Montreal has quit carrying it after several of her clients ended up with sick dog. Other dogs that we know of personally have developed crystals in the bladder and had to go in perscription diets.

Boone and Franks have been back on kibble since May .. (we will be Barfing again soon ) I have been feeding Canidae purchased from multiple locations and I personally have had no issues.

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed anything or had issues.

Re: Change in Canidae?

My 2 dogs eat Canidae without any problems. They've been on it now for 2 years.

What is the expiration date on the bag? Where are they storing it? Is it possible to check the lot number and compare?

Re: Change in Canidae?

I don't know anything specific except that the 3 boutique dog stores in my neighborhood stopped carrying it

Re: Change in Canidae?

Athena started having loose stools on Canidae, so I switched her to California Natural.

While on the California Natural, the problem cleared up -- month later, we were back to diarrhea, but this time, found out it was giardia.

I have no idea - I don't feed Bella Canidae
I just know the stores around me are not carrying it

Re: Change in Canidae?

I am a former feeder of Canidae. I switched about 10 months ago. I began to notice inconsistencies from bag to bag, such as the kibble being a different color & it smelled different (stale?). I was always very conscientious about checking expiry dates on the bags, so I know this wasn't old kibble.

I also noticed that my dogs, who formerly did well on Canidae, weren't eating it with their former enthusiasm. I started to notice loose stool, eye boogers, burping, & much higher stool volume.

I don't know if it is a quality control issue within the company, a formula change, or if they began to cut corners with their choice of ingredients. I contacted Canidae & they claimed that they had not changed the formula in any way. Their claims don't wash with me. Something must have changed. Either that, or dogs develop an intolerance to Canidae over time.

Re: Change in Canidae?

From the additional info I have been getting it seems that the canned formula .. one in particular (chicken, lamb and rice in chicken broth) has been a consistant factor .. with people noticing it looks and smells different.

Re: Change in Canidae?

I also switched from Canidae when I noticed the food smelled strange, was greasy and the dogs didn't do so well on it anymore. Feed Chicken Soup and Innova now.

Re: Change in Canidae?

I also mix the Chicken Soup and the Innova. My dogs have always done really well on the food. If you look at the amount to feed, the two bags are totally different. He is 14 weeks old, and I feed him 3x a day with a cup each feeding. His weight seems to be fine. My sheltie lived til she was almost 17 years, and never a coat problem or anything and she was on Innova for years. Don't know if the food had anything to do with it, but she never did get the grey in her face. People thought she was like 2 years old or younger. I should be so lucky.

I think someone posted that they feed 3 times a day til they are 6 months old. So I was going by that.

Re: Change in Canidae?

I was very interested to find this post this morning.

I switched Cyrus from Solid Gold to Canidae back in July. I did notice that 2 bags smelled differently, but he did so well on it I continued to buy it. He really likes it, his coat improved with diminished shedding, etc.

Late last week I opened a new bag and it smells OK but I noticed Cyrus eating grass and vomiting clear liquid 2X since then. He also had 1 bout of diarrhea but that was Friday and I thought perhaps a relative slipped him some food he isn't used to on Thanksgiving. Apart from that, his stools are fine and he is eating, drinking and behaving normally.

His annual check up is due this week so of course I will tell the vet.

I am wondering if the new bag of Canidae is related?

Re: Change in Canidae?

Some very, very small changes were made back at the first of this year.....for instance, menhaden meal became herring meal.....but that was Jan or Feb. Chicory was added. Mostly, it was labelling changes required by the AAFCO. I've got the notice at work, I can post details tomorrow if you're interested.

I've not heard of any problems in the Carolinas.

Re: Change in Canidae?

We've been feeding Canidae for about 18 months and we've noticed no problems with Nikki or Claus.

Old---468.75 kcal per cup
