Raw feeders..Rabbit?

Do any of you that feed your dogs a raw diet feed them Rabbit? Do you feed them whole or cut up? Are raw Rabbit bones safe for dogs to eat, like raw chicken bones? One of the Meijer's stores that I call on sells fresh Rabbit. It is packaged for sale so it is already skinned, etc... Brodie is fed kibble but on occassion he does get pieces of raw steak or chicken. When we roast a whole chicken Brodie gets all of the innards(Gizzard, heart, neck, etc). I've been thinking of giving Brodie more raw foods on an occasional basis. Special treats, etc. Would rabbit be OK to give him?

Assuming that the rabbit is marketed for human consumption, yes, it would be fine. I guess it tastes just like chicken, huh?

Re: Raw feeders..Rabbit?

Bruce and Henry regulary get whole rabbit ( fur and innards included ) .
They are well able to crunch thru the bones with ease .
Has Brodie ever had boney meat to eat before ? If not I'd start with chicken wings as they're an easy to chew raw meaty item . That way your dog can learn to chew raw foods and not just swallow it whole . Work up to legs/thighs and the rest of the chicken .
If your dog is able to eat chicken carcasses I'd expect rabbits would be no problem.
Be sure and supervise feedings to make sure there are no problems .

I tried Rabbit. Sajan ate it at first then turned his nose up at it but it is perfectly safe for them.

Fur and all? I am not sure I could take that. Do they eat the fur?

Re: Raw feeders..Rabbit?

I've fed whole ground rabbit, fur included! The dog had no problem with it.
I didn't notice much in the "exit area" either, so she may be sporting a fur-lined stomach!
I also know of people who've fed whole ducks, feathers and all!
I'd be more concerned about feeding wild rabbit vs farm raised, because of the internal and external parasites, and tularemia (rabbit fever).

Re: Raw feeders..Rabbit?

Julius has ate raw rabbit, fur & all as well & adores it. We buy the farm-raised rabbit also. The first time he turned his nose up at it though. It's a special treat for him though because of the price, but it's something that he really enjoys.

Re: Raw feeders..Rabbit?

Well, Misha did catch a wild rabbit once and before I could get it from her she'd already eaten the head. So I guess I already had the answer to my question, but I forgot about that incident. LOL

Re: Raw feeders..Rabbit?

Rabbitt is more expensive than chicken but good for the dogs... My oldest doesn't like the rabbit... may be too rich for him???? But he certainly likes to chase them!!!
