Questions about feeding

I found these forums again :) and had a question in regards to feeding my dog.

How much and how many times a day should I used the controlled method of feeding him.

he is 1 1/2 years old. The vet says he's healthy but he still looks rather small to me.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

We feed Julius twice a day. How much does your dog weigh?

Re: Questions about feeding

We feed twice a day and each dog gets a different amount of food based on their particular needs. Figure it like this, do you do better on one meal a day or at least two (or more )?

Re: Questions about feeding

Dogs are canids, and as such are designed to consume large amounts of food quickly whenever it is available. They also evolved to fast frequently, and to do well on this sort of lifestyle.

Knowing and understanding this, my adult dogs are fed ONCE per day. Puppies, any dog that is sick or overly stressed, and dogs past 8 or 9 years old, depending on how the dog ages, are fed more often. Healthy adult dogs are fasted one day per week here.

I am a raw feeder, and this way works best for me and my dogs, but of course, many other ways work for others as well.

Re: Questions about feeding

Two meals a day here (the right amount is the amount that keeps your dog at a healthy weight, there is no universal "right" amount by weight or height or breed or food, you should judge how much to feed based on your dog's condition and nothing else). I feel it's healthier to spread out the day's calories, reduces gulping of the food (because the dog isn't as hungry), makes delaying meals for training sessions simpler, and reduces the workload on the body. Since the way things are for a species in a "natural" state is not necessarily what's best or ideal, but rather simply the minimum that works to allow a species to continue, I don't always agree with attempting to emulate how things are in nature. Re: Questions about feeding

We feed Guerin twice a day, and our older boy 3 small meals a day. This started when he had stomach issues and we just have not changed the habit, works well for him and us. The pugs are grazers and are free fed. We follow the kibble recommendations on the bag and adjust for the individual.

Re: Questions about feeding

Always have fed three times a day..daily ration split into three small meals. Recommended by our naturopathic vet as easier on the system and less problems with stomach over load. Bailey is 2 1/2 years and gets 1/2 cup of Canidae with warmed water over it..three times a day and it maintains her weight consistently at 93 pounds.

Re: Questions about feeding

I have always fed twice a day. Getting involved in "what" you are feeding is like starting on a discussion on religion or politics. You dog is far from grown so don't try to bulk him up at this age. It will come naturally depending upon his genetics. He will continue bodying up until about 4 years of age. Relax and wait peacefully.

Re: Questions about feeding

My guys are fed twice a day, except the puppy who will eat 3x a day til he's 6 months. I feed enough to keep the ribs showing through and hip points easily palpable. The amount varies on the dog and it's activity levels.

We feed Caesar usually three meals/day however if he's full he will stop eating regardless of whether there's food left in the bowl or not. He is 26 months old and 100lbs. You have a big dog there, SonnyRott!!

Yes, we have to watch his figure. He would eat ALL day if we let him. Those 2 cup meals are inhaled in about a minute (60 - 90 seconds). I know it may be hard to believe, but it's true.

That is why he eats twice a day as opposed to one. It is just too much food at one feeding for such a gulper. I'll post new pics.

Re: Questions about feeding

I think all large dogs should be fed at least 2x per day and the food should be well-soaked. I would worry about bloat especially if a dog is over-hungry and gulps it's food.
