| Horrible gas for several days Somehow, both dogs have the worst case of gas ever! It clears me out of the room and sometimes makes them leave too! It's literally gagging me. It's non stop, all night long, all day long. I think they are trying to out do eachother. Roxy eats Canidae and has for 2 years with no real problems. Diesel is now eating Pinnacle Trout and Pot. We have done a gradual switch from Hills Rx food after he stopped tolerating that. He has IBD. Not sure what I can do for him, if it's the food, or what. He's the worst out of the two (and of course laying next to me). His stool is either loose, or pretty hard, getting loose at the end. I think we might be going to home cooked for him soon. Nothing has changed with their diets and they havent gotten into anything. Roxy had a few little pieces of cheese on Sunday, had people over and we have the ppl hold a piece in their hand until she comes up to them. Diesel has had nothing. Please help! |

| Re: Horrible gas for several days Days eh? Have your dogs been "stressed" out about anything lately? Any habitat changes? ANy "routine" changes? I ask, cuz the other night my little guy got into major trouble for growling and nipping at me when I was taking something he picked up on a walk he shouldn't have had, and didn't want to let go. Later, I went out and left my dog at home, I never leave him home at night he always comes with me. And when I got back he had the runs! He never got treats all day, he only got kibble for dinner. ANd his poops were better the next day. I think he was stressed out cuz he was in trouble, and then I left him at home and didn't take him with me. WHo knows what goes through their minds.

| Re: Horrible gas for several days Diesel has a new bag, just opened last week. Roxy is about 1/2 through her bag. We did travel this past weekend for a funeral and we stayed with my cousin who has a 7 month lab pup. The dogs played together all weekend. I just got home and my house smells like eggs. YUCK!!!!!!!!! Last night before I got into bed my husband was in there with the dogs and he said it sounded like fireworks. They are both acting fine. I do think it's more Diesel than Roxy though. I'm racking my mind trying to think of what they might have gotten in. They could have gotten something in my cousins yard I suppose. We were always out there with them, but it's a big yard and they are sneaky!! |

| Re: Horrible gas for several days I would take them to the vet, just to be on the safe side...'specially if they are vomiting and have loose b/ms...but i am pretty paranoid and overprotective! You know your dogs better than anyone, do you think they are ill? Carrie |

| Re: Horrible gas for several days So what do they do when they're outside? Any mushrooms popping up in your yard or other plant they both nibble on? Something's new...could be a virus they picked up, too. Since they both have gastro symptoms, I'd let the vet have a look see. Bring a sample of vomit and diarrhea from each. |

| Re: Horrible gas for several days Just spoke to one of our vet techs. No dinner for them tonight and a little tomorrow morning. See how they're doing. If Diesel isnt getting any better then off we go to the vet again. Roxy doesn't have diarhea (thankfully!). If it was just her that threw up I wouldn't be as concerned, it's Diesel and all of his issues that bother me. My cousin is doing a lot of remodleing to his house, but we really don't let them out of our site. Or at least Diesel, he tries to get into everything. As for our back yard, there is nothing but mud. My mom says that they are sick from that. We cannot grow grass. We live in a townhouse that backs to the woods and it's wet and dark back there. There's about 3 pieces of grass that Roxy pees on everytime. And leaves. I got them 2 new nylabones and 2 new toys last week, but they are still in tact. I'm racking my brain trying to think if they got into anything. Roxy had booster shots last wednesday. ????? At least my nose is getting used to the smell now. |

| Re: Horrible gas for several days Is your cousin's lab experiencing the same thing? The best way to put yourself at ease would be a visit to the vet and as moondog says, bring sample from both dogs. Hope they feel better soon! |

| Re: Horrible gas for several days They were definitely not farting up a storm for nothing. And since it sounds like this is something unusual for them (farting), I would say they may have injested something at your cousins house. Do they have Honeysuckle or Holly bushes in their backyard? Give your cousin a call and ask what type of plants they have just to be on the safe side. Poor, sick puppers! |

| Re: Horrible gas for several days I would suggest pulling them off their regular diet for a day or two and go bland. Rice and boiled hamburger....if Diesel can handle that. I am surprised the vet did not suggest a blan diet until their bellys settle down. It definately sounds like something upset them both. I would also suggeset a probiotic and/or enzyme to help keep their guts stable, might help with Diesel's IBD. Good luck and hopefully the poor puppers are feeling better.

| Re: Horrible gas for several days Roxy is doing much better today. She snuggled with us in bed last night before i went to sleep. She usually doesn't like to stay there too long. She got a little bit of food this morning and we tried for Diesel too. He had a normal poop outside, then he came in and went upstairs and had diarrhea in front of a bathroom! We were thinking to just do rice for him tonight. I know brown rice is better for everyone in general, but I'm not sure if white rice would be better for Diesel. Thoughts? We used to have them both on a probiotic that our breeder recommended. I can't remember the name off hand. Our trainer also recommended we try it again with Diesel (she has an IBD dog also). |

| Re: Horrible gas for several days Before the rice, you should probably fast them completely (water only) for a day to let things settle down. And when feeding a bland diet you should use white rice. This isn't going to be an ongoing diet, it's temporary, so no need to worry about ongoing nutrition (brown may be better, but it does not count as bland). As a general rule, whenever you're dealing with an upset digestive system, you should always fast for 12-24 hours, then small, frequent meals of a bland diet (unseasoned, cooked rice & cooked hamburger or cooked ground chicken/turkey) until stools return to normal, then gradually phase back in the regular food. Switching straight from regular food to bland diet without a fast period to rest the gut is unlikely to be as successful.
