What kind (brand/scent) of shampoo do you prefer for your rotties?

I am just trying to get opinions. I know most of you do not bathe very often. How often do you bathe (on average) and what kind of shampoo do you prefer? Conan has had about 4 baths in 8 months, (trying to get rid of the shelter smell) but I have used different brands of shampoo. The fresh n clean by lambert key seems to be my favorite so far, because it has a great smell.

Re: What kind (brand/scent) of shampoo do you prefer for your rotties?

Depending on our circumstances I bathe once every two weeks, in the summer because of the heat I could bathe 1X per week but it all depends. I have tried many many shampoos but always return to ORIGINS Doggie Shampoo. The last time I purchased a bottle the manager told me that they were discontinuing the product or introducing it with new packaging, so I bought 3 large bottles.
The smell is fabulous and doesn't cause any skin irratations.

In terms of getting rid of the 'shelter smell', that may be coming from INSIDE the dog as well as his coat. It'll take some time to get that out of him - depending on how long he was in the shelter. Baron is now starting to smell like a clean dog after being with us a month - he was in the shelter for about a month when we got him. A few weeks of good food, clean soft bedding and plenty of exercise and he's starting to smell fresh and clean .

He DID get a bath with a deodorizing shampoo (Septiderm-V) that is also an antiseptic shampoo. Smells OK, better than the shelter smell! I use the earthbath Oatmeal & Aloe formula for regular baths, which Baron and the crew are all due for before it gets too much cooler here in CT. I love the smell of it - not too strong but nice a fresh.

I like MiracleCoat shampoo. I think it's from Australia. It has tea tree oil in it. Rocky gets bathed a couple days before a show. He hasn't been shown for about 5 months now so he did get a bath a couple weeks ago. Normally if I'm outside washing cars I will soak him a few times with the hose and that seems to clean him up pretty good. It's a great game for him.

We use Natural Oatmeal Shampoo by Eight In One. We like it because it helps with the itchy's during allergy season.

In the summer we wet out girls down to keep them cool. They only time we actually bathe them is if they get dirty. This usually involves rolling in something stinky...

My dogs get bathed once a month. The Shibas get bathed more if we have shows because of their white feet and tummies

My favorite shampoo is Double K oat mela

I like Buddy Wash that smells like lavender. It leaves her coat soft and shiny and smells heavenly.

Wow. Athena actually gets this disgusting buildup on her coat, and if you pet her too much, you can see a film on your hands. What are you feeding Larry?
And so I stay within topic, what did you wash Storm with 4 years ago???

I prefer a shampoo with NO scent. Baby powder makes me sick to my stomach. A clean dog shouldn't smell like anything, just like fresh fish shouldn't smell like anything.
Rottweilers are not supposed to have soft coats. It may feel real nice, but it is a breed fault to have a soft coat. My biggest problem with finding a good shampoo is finding one that doesn't turn my dogs' coat soft.
Anyone have suggestions on a non smelling shampoo that doesn't make the coat soft?

I'm also very careful when I bathe Asa. I do it a few days before the show so his coat texture will be correct and the shine returns. I find if I do it the day before his coat is rather wavy and not as shiny.

I love Groomers Edge Dynamic Duo.

Re: What kind (brand/scent) of shampoo do you prefer for your rotties?

it averages out to about a bath every 2 weeks....

I tried the Origins Shampoo on tasha, but she started smelling "doggie-ish" by the end of the week. so I switched her back to a tearless puppy shampoo (puppy love?).

She's still got some of her puppy fur, but it's going quickly. Once i'm done with the puppy shampoo, i'll probably move onto something that doesn't make her coat so soft.

Re: What kind (brand/scent) of shampoo do you prefer for your rotties?

I bathe the dogs between every 2-4 weeks. I use a perscription shampoo - clorhexiderm. I first got it for my boxer who was shedding a lot and the vet was concerned about a fugal infection - this was right after I got him. She said it was fine to use on all the dogs, so I did. It was the first time that my dogs were shiny right after they dried and not the next day. I'm not an expert, but I don't think it makes them too soft either, there is definetely still texture and no smell. I bathe them that often because they get dirty - when I pet them for a few minutes and my hand is caked with dirt - it's time for a bath.
