Talking Various Pork Parts...

Okay so Ryan & I went to the grocery store today to pick up some marrow bones & saw pigs feet & pork hocks. Are these okay to give to Julius. Ryan thinks no, but I'm not so sure. I know that pork can be a sensitive tummy issue & Julius does get pork heart with no problem.

I'm just wondering if it would be okay to give him a pigs foot or hock? Or is it a no-no?!?

I typically freeze any pork that Julius gets (he doesn't get that much) for around 20 days to kill any worms (trichinosis). If you do give your dogs feet/hocks do you do this as well?

Thanks ya'll!

Brooke

Re: Various Pork Parts...

I don't know about feet and hocks, but when Cyrus had a raw pork bone he had very soft stools after.

Re: Various Pork Parts...

Hi Brooke! I've been feeding different pork parts since the girl was a pup, including ground pork, heart and kidney. I've fed these items right out of the package without a problem. Trichinosis is no longer the threat it once was because the sanitation issues on the hog farms have been addressed, and the feeds have been improved.
I've avoided the hocks because they look like a choking hazard to me. Pork
feet, tails, ribs and meaty neckbones are all fine though.
Best wishes to you, Ryan and Julius!

What I am worried about is the small bones in the feet and the density of the larger bones. I could see them possibly being a choking hazard and the idea of large chunks of dense bone kinda scares me. Is this somthing I should be worried about?
