Bully Sticks

Many people mentioned these in the "Pressed Rawhide" thread so I wanted to try them. What do you all recommend for rotties. I see they come in 6", 12", and longer, and braided. Ebay, as Brooke said, appears to have the best prices.

P.S. - you are all aware, apparently, what these are made of? Kinda surprised me!

Re: Bully Sticks

Yes, they are pizzles. I'd go for the 12" ones or longer for a Rottie (I give the 12" ones to Rakki, and he's a LOT smaller than a Rottie, but he's a very enthusiastic chewer). I'd also try the braided ones, they seem to slow Rakki down a bit until he unwinds them, but then, because the individual sticks seem to be smaller, he gets through them pretty quickly. A dog who didn't unwind them, but ate the whole thing as one stick, would probably take longer to eat a braided one than a regular one.

Re: Bully Sticks

I'd like to try these also. Are they something that must be given in the crate? Do they smell and do they stain the carpets?

Thanks.

Re: Bully Sticks

They don't stain that I've ever noticed, but they do smell, but only when they're all gummy and wet.

Re: Bully Sticks

I'm with spidey, so far I've noticed no stains on my white carpet. The carpets not in the greatest shape from Mr. Hercules, but I still haven't noticed any discoloration from the sticks.

Actually, I got wind of the bully sticks from MontanaRott's post a while ago. After she mentioned it I saw the big whopper of one at the store and couldn't resist. The sales clerk went out of her way to say that it was one bull ya know. My eyes popped on that - how is that possible??? I haven't measured exactly but it's got to be at least 3 feet long.

The other day I tried to take a scissors and/or knife and cut it into smaller sections. Was not going to happen! I was looking for my hacksaw or pruning shears but couldn't find them, so they're pretty tough.

You should have seen Hercules when I gave it to him out of the car. He tried carrying it into the house, but it was too long! He kept knocking it out of his mouth to get it through the doorway. He finally caught on.

I really haven't noticed a smell too much, but I haven't gotten down on the ground when he's chewing on it either. But when Hercules sticks his face in mine afterwards, his breath kinda smells like pepperoni or salami to me.

Re: Bully Sticks

I ordered 10 12" super thick bully sticks from www.dogcatsupply.com for $32. Shipping was free for a $29+ order so it pretty much worked out to be the same price as on ebay. They say they don't stain carpet and don't smell bad. We'll see!

Re: Bully Sticks

My Gable LOVES bully sticks. I was surprised at what they were made out of too. I will have to try that website that Patty1231 bought them from, because they are pretty pricey. I use the 6" now, because I thought the 12" were too big for him. I have noticed that the raw hide gives him an upset belly and these don't seem to have an effect on him....he loves them.

My dogs think they are THE best! They have their own website, too.

Re: Bully Sticks

I looked at the bullystick website, Beth, but they won't give you the shipping until your order is about to be sent. Do you know what the average tax/shipping charges are?

Re: Bully Sticks

Found them at the best price from J-B Wholesale Pet Supplies (called pizzles, not bully sticks):

www.jbpet.com

6in ones are $.99 each
11in ones are $1.95 each

I ordered 10 of each and shipping was $7.99.

Total for 20 pizzles plus shipping was $37.39

Re: Bully Sticks

Thanks for the heads-up! Definitely a better price than I paid. Next time I'll order those and see how they compare.
