food and it's impact on your dog's coat

I just wanted to say that I adopted Conan in February, and I posted here about how bad he smelled, even after he got a bath. It has now been almost 8 months, and I have been feeding Nutro Natural Choice, until the past two weeks, when I switched to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's soul. I wanted to say that even though Nutro Natural choice is not considered a really great food, it is still much better than what he was being fed before I got him, and he has NO ODOR now! Even though he goes outside and plays in the dirt, he has no odor and he is very shiny. I just wanted to share that with anyone new on the board that has a "stinky" dog! :)

"Shelter smell" is the result of the environment, stress, the other dogs, living quarters, illnesses as well as the food and it usually takes several months to go away. It comes from the body as well as the respiration. All through the dog who doesn't understand at all why we hold our noses!

So glad your boy smells as sweet as he is now. Makes the whole relationship much nicer doesn't it?

Re: food and it's impact on your dog's coat

Our two girls smell so good that I often bury my nose in their ruffs & snuffle around. They do not smell like dogs. They sleep with us and their dad has a very sensitive nose.

The only time they have a slight doggy smell is when they get soaked from walks in the rain--and that disappears after they're briskly toweled off and their coats dry out.

We feed Squeak Nutro Natural and it has been wonderful for her. Her coat is shiny and she does not have that dog smell. I like to snuggle up with her and the last thing I want is a smelly dog lol.
