Tabitha hates her new food

Any thoughts on what would cause her to not eat.

I gradually switched her from Nutro large breed puppy to Canadie (sp?). I tend to mix her canned food with the dry and began the switch on the canned food 1st about 3 weeks ago. I then did a 50/50 mix with dry this weekend and she is not eating.

One other thing that may have influenced this. I had a house guest that has been staying with me for the last 6 months, she had two black labs, she left on Sunday, would this impact her eating habits and if so for how long.

If it is that she dislikes her food, how long should I wait til I try another, should I get some nutra canned to get her used to the Canadie dry?

Looking for some ideas.

Thanks,

db

Re: Tabitha hates her new food

I know that my Dogs tend to not eat, or pick at their food every so often. This useually lasts for a day or 2.

Now I couldn't tell if you were doing all dry at this point or mixed wet / dry.
When we did wet food for awhile then went back to dry, they "protested" for a day. turned up their noses at the dry stuff. My cat did the same thing after he had his teeth done. He had to be on soft for a few weeks then back to the dry. He protested for a couple of days. Just picked at the food.

Anyway, just some thoughts.

if its canadea you want her to eat then she will eventually eat it.. i would feed her and leave the food 20 minutes and then give it to her at the next feeding.. she will eat

Offer the food to her at her usual feeding times, if she turns up her nose, give her about 20 minutes, and take it away, offer it again at the next meal... Something to think about with a switch from a good brand to a super premium is that the dog sometimes looks at it as eating a cheeseburger Vs eating some tofu... give her acouple of days and she should get into the swing of things...

Funny that you mention that. I bring Hercules Innova food over to my Aunt's house when we go swimming. He never turns his nose up at it at home, but when my Aunt whips out the mega cheapo food from the grocery store, Hercules MUST have that stuff. Like you said, I think it's like eating cheeseburgers vs. tofu! I'm sure if you follow the prescribed advice, your pup will get interested quick!

Re: Tabitha hates her new food

MOST certainly having two doggy friends leave the home can make her go off her food!

The last rescue Shiba that we had here, we had about a month. Mishu and Bea quickly became fast friends and played a lot in the evenings and weekends. When I placed Mishu Bea barely ate, refused to sleep on my bed and moped around like a lump of clay. This asted about 3+ weeks and then she SLOWLY started going back to normal

I can't even imagine how bad it would have been if Mishu had been with us 6 months!! Give her time and don't baby her, also try to keep her active to keep er mind busy as well

I heard inexpensive dog food is sprayed with fat before it's packaged to make it smell appealing.

I thought that might be part of the issue and yes she is being kept busy as best we can.

I came home last night to a dog with the zoomies but still no desire for food and she did not eat dinner.

Fed her this morning and at 1st she declined to eat. I left her in the back yard alone while I showered for work, when I came out, she had eaten, maybe she is becoming shy lol!

Anyways, thanks for the advice guys, I appreciate it!
