Crates and Raw Bones

For those of you who give your dogs raw meaty bones in their crates: do you need to clean the crate out afterward? I'd like to start feeding raw bones on occasion, but I can't feed them outside for various reasons, so it will have to be in the crate, and I'm a bit concerned about how much mess it will make.

I put a towel down when I feed raw bones in the crate for that exact reason.

I only have one dog, so I put down a sheet in the living room and have taught Elmo that when he has his bone, he has to stay on the sheet. You could do the same with the crate...easy clean up...just wash the towel or sheet.

Re: Crates and Raw Bones

I feed three in crates everyday! They love Emu necks, which fortunatley still contain the jugular(sp) vein and make it look like a Jason Movie while they are eating. However, my little pigs lick every bit up and I spritz the plastic crate liner once a week with a bleach formula cleaner. If it were just one dog I am sure you could teach them to eat on a plastic mat in the kitchen or just feed outdoors if possible. I'm just lazy and don't want to have to mop up chicken juice and other debris everyday, so the crates work best for us.

Give that dog a bone! LOL! Happy munching!

Re: Crates and Raw Bones

I learnt the hard way to not give raw bones on my cement floor. Now, in the winter, I just pull everything out of the crate and give it on the plastic tray (wire crate). During the summer I give them outside.

We give them in the crate and just use a disinfectant after he is done.

YUCK. BLECCH. Yep, the dogs and raw meaty bones go OUTSIDE. They get them 3 times a week or so, and it's a bit of a challenge since they can't have their bones together...but the mess and the smell in their crates (which are in my bedroom) is just too much.

Re: Crates and Raw Bones

Ours are fed bones in their crates, otherwise Akasha will try and steal everyones bone and she ends up with a pile in front of her, while everyone else goes boneless

I put a towel in her crate and Keil has blankets on the floor of the laundry room where he stays right now. I clean their crates as needed.

Re: Crates and Raw Bones

When Cyrus was crated I would mop it out with all purpose cleaner. Now he chews them on the floor, knows not to go on the rugs.

One morning I woke up to one next to my face! The little scroundrel apparently took it to bed with him after I was asleep! Yuck oh YUCK!
