Prebiotic vs Probiotic

Does anyone know what the difference between a probiotic and prebiotic is? I know that I should be feeding a pro to help the natural Flora's in the stomach grow....but what would a pre do and why would I feed it?

My pregnant brain took in WAY too much info at the vets office today and I lost some of it on the way home...so instead of looking dumb and calling them back, trying to see if any of you can help! (the eye roll is at my lack of memory!)

Re: Prebiotic vs Probiotic

The prebiotic, FOS bypasses the stomach and small intestine and ferments in the large intestine

Fortification of probiotics with prebiotic Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) enhances the value of probiotics by providing a nutrient that selectively enhances the growth of friendly cultures.

I think probiotic is alive, and prebiotic isn't, but targets specific bacterias.
