Flax Seed

We have a new market in town with really neat stuff. (happy happy me)... Came across some whole flax seed, thought I'd feed it to the whole family... me and mrpooh in salads, and sprinkle some on the kibble for perros...

How much per day is a good amount to give the dogs? Weights range between 76lbs, and 105lbs.

Is this like vitamin C, where you should start small, and build up, or is it all right to give a level amount, and keep it there?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Flax Seed

I may be mistaken but I seem to remember reading somewhere that for flax seed to be absorbed it needs to be ground. That said, some dog owners have noticed that when feeding flax seed or oil, their dog has become itchy.
As for how much, I can't help there as I don't use it unless it comes in something I buy at the health store.

Re: Flax Seed

Leonberger is correct. For whole flax seed to be used by the body it must be ground. It has many benefits including B vitamins and healthy omega oils. I grind it and sprinkle it on yogurt, salads, cereals, etc.

Dogs however benefit from the flax seed oil. You can do a search on "Yahoo" for Flax Seed and Dogs and you should find some helpful information.

Re: Flax Seed

Elisabeth I have done some interesting reading on flaxseed and omega 3 fatty acids since they both are as such, IOW, Omega 3 oils are much more benefical then the flaxseed and have been proven to decrease in many types of illnesses, such as, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, Lupus, MS, migraines and many more, not to mention it helps boost the immune system.

I give Czar fatty acids, dermcaps to be exact and after the reading I've done, my hubby and I will be taking Omega 3 fatty acids as well bc it helps soooo many things and is great for risks of heart attack but anyway, think about which one may be better for you, read up on both and I think you'll find that the Omega 3 is better and when I get a minute I will post the info I've learned, about this and the mercury found in fish, which is why studies are now showing the fatty acids taken in supplements are BETTER then eating most fish.

Hope this helps .

Judy
