Radiant Coat

Any suggestions as to how to make a coat shinnier? Anything other than fish oil would be appreciated. I think Diesel is allergic to fish. I gave him lobster one day.. he threw that up.... plain tuna.. threw that up too.

Re: Radiant Coat

Try mixing olive oil in his kibble, if you feed him that. I usually mixed about 1 Tablespoon once a day. I also feed our dogs scrambled eggs. Their coats are very shiny.

Re: Radiant Coat

I have had numerous people ask me what I put on my dogs' coats to make them so shiny.

Of course, as you know, it comes from the INSIDE, not the outside.

Good sources of fat and protein make good hair coats.

Try canned mackerel instead of the tuna. Mix it with some steamed green beans and yoghurt, or put it with his kibble instead of just feeding the straight fish. Eggs are great too, as one of the bachs mentioned. I never can remember if it's J or P.

Start with small amounts. Add digestive enzymes or plain yoghurt if the dog has digestive issues with it.

Gas-X is a staple product at our house, we would not live without it. It eliminates doggy gas issues pronto if you ever have them.

Re: Radiant Coat

Ben gets a table spoon of olive oil with each meal - and he gets eggs a few times a week when I have 'em for breakfast.

A good brushing can help too - gets the dander/dead hairs out of the coat and brings the natural oils to the surface.

You can greatly improve a coat by feeding green tripe. My dogss get it at least everyother day and love it. Their coats are all soft, silky and glowing.

Re: Radiant Coat

Diesel eats boiled eggs a few times a week. His coat looked great. It seems kind of dull to me now. He eats Nutro for large breed pups.

Re: Radiant Coat

I mix one tablespoon of flaxseed oil in with Skuly's food and her coat is like black glass.

Re: Radiant Coat

Flaxseed oil may be purchased at any quality health food store. I have always found that starting with a quality dog food with a nice protein and fat content(I use Royal Canin)(low fat content = crumby coat), some oil, egg, raw chicken with the skin (no skin for pups) and daily wire brush followed up with horsehair brush gives a very lusterous coat. I also find the surface your dog lives on impacts it also; gravel base with its chalky dust will dry the coat, same with decompsed granite and the likes. Quality protein shampoos and a 'leave in conditioner' works well for me also. Now I just recently saw Tough and Arni and their coats are absolutely mind blowing. The only thing different was the implementation of a supplement. The coats where so shiney they appeared absolutely wet, truly impressive. I do like the flaxseed over olive and vegetable, though there is a cost increase. Good for their heart too.

Re: Radiant Coat

I buy flaxseed oil at Whole Foods. It's a black bottle in the refrigerator of the supplement section. I have to pick up a bottle today, so i will get the brand name for you.

Re: Radiant Coat

If you are going to use flax seed oil, make sure you buy it someplace where it's refrigerated. If it has been sitting on a shelf, or it's the kind in the capsules, it's worthless.

Flax seed oil is wonderful, but very very heat sensitive and fragile. It must be kept refrigerated, and not combined with hot things either.

If you are using the Sea Meal, it contains ground flax seed now, so I don't use quite as much flax seed oil as I used to, but it's a very good oil to use with dogs.

Almost any health food store will have flax seed oil, and under refrigeration.

Re: Radiant Coat

Rather than adding a supplement, you might want to spend that money on a switch to a super-premium food.

Re: Radiant Coat

I have a friend who uses mayonnaise, but I would also prefer flaxseed or olive oil.
