Anyone know anything about Wellness food?

I'm looking into it as we're pursuing other food options (if food allergies pop up). It looks good, but I don't know a whole lot about it. Bastian is currently on Flint River Ranch, but pretty much has close to constant diarrhea and has been itching lately. I would love any information anyone can offer. Thank you!

Birdie is on Wellness (Super5 Mix Lamb). She was on Canidae, but she showed signs of allergies on it. I'm not sure if that's what it was, but all the symptoms stopped when I put her on Wellness. It's a very good food and Birdie loves it.

I'm looking at the fish and sweet potato one. He loves fish, so I'm not worried about that, I just wasn't sure the quality. I think I'm going to pick up some canned today (if I can find it) for a treat on his food.

I've given her the fish and sweet potato, too. She loves it, but I can't deal with the smell!

Wellness is well regarded, I know lots of people that are happy with it. But it's fairly high in carbs in its class, and I won't use it for that reason.

If your dog has chronic diarrhea, my first suspicion would be wheat. Which formula are you using?

Re: Anyone know anything about Wellness food?

I used Wellness for years but in the past few months became dissatisfied with the consistancy from bag to bag. Some seemed fresher than others and my dogs' stools would change from firm to loose depending on the bag. It is an excellent food and my dogs' did very well on it but maybe it is not getting down here as regularly as it should or something. Anyway, I switched to Innova.

Re: Anyone know anything about Wellness food?

I have used Wellness kibble for years and am very happy with the results/consistency. I buy the chicken version. I also buy the canned version (chicken) and put about a fork-full of the canned in with the kibble in his evening meal. His morning meal is just the kibble. I tried Healthwise for awhile (I think it's made by Innova) because I thought it was comparable to Wellness but a little less money. The stools were too loose on the Healthwise, so I decided to stick with the Wellness. I think it's a great dog food.

Re: Anyone know anything about Wellness food?

I've been using Wellness kibble & wet for Abby since she arrived, and she does very well on it. I also use their cat food for my two cats. The wet cat food is the only brand where the non-fish flavors don't have fish as an ingredient, with the result that my fish-sensitive cat has been barfing far less than she used to on other foods.

Re: Anyone know anything about Wellness food?

I feed Ilsa Wellness Super 5 Mix Lamb because I found that she does better on it than the other super premiums we've tried. Canidae and Innova both give her diarrhea and she would often puke up breakfast. California Natural and Royal Canin Holistic were a little better, but she still had very soft stools. Wellness is the only food I've found that lets her produce consistently solid stools, and I suspect that may be because of the high fiber content.

So that's what works for her. I've fed other dogs Canidae, Innova, and CA Natural with good results, but my sensitive girl does better on Wellness. Hubie the Beagle has a steel stomach, so he is getting Wellness as well because he does fine on it and the lower calorie count lets him have a bit more volume in his bowl than some of the others would.

Re: Anyone know anything about Wellness food?

I feed my cat wellness Lite cat kibble. I too noticed a difference in the Bags. One was fresh the other one didnt look so good. I ended up taking it back where I got it from and they traded it out. Either way it is GOOD stuff.
Personally I feed my dogs canidae. They are doing VERY well on it so I choose not to change them to something else.

He is currently on Flint River Chicken formula. It does have wheat. We're going to do the blood testing as I tried switching him to California Natural and the switch reeked such havoc on his body that I decided I wasn't going to switch until I had a better idea what the problem was. Our Breeder and vet both agree that it's a start at least.

Wait a minute. Wheat may or may not be the culprit, but if two CHICKEN-based foods are giving him trouble, try eliminating that first. Have you tried beef or lamb foods?

Yes, the California Natural was Lamb and Rice. I really think the problem there was just too fast of a switch. I like the baked foods better though which is why I'm looking into Wellness.

Re: Anyone know anything about Wellness food?

I've fed Wellness for many years. It was the only premium food available way back when where we live, so that's what we fed. Happily, that situation has changed over time, and now we have our choice of premium foods. Our dogs have continued to eat Wellness, all happily and with great results. I see no reason to change.

I rotate between the 3 meat formulations to vary the amino acids the dogs get.
