Dremmel Help!

"Has anyone caught their own finger nails on a dremmel?

Lately our one yr old rottie HATES having his nails done. Any suggestions? We now try and dremmel them at least every other day - his nails grow like weeds - and we do it lightly every other day to get him used to it."

I posted this on the dremmel thread, and I thought if I posted a new thread I might get some advice.

Duce is okay dremmeling his back paws, but when it comes to the front- WOW- :o you would think I was torturing the dog. His front nails grow so fast.

Any suggestions??

Re: Dremmel Help!

How have you gone about accustoming him to this? Good training info here (click on "how to Dremel a dog's nails). Lots of treats and patience, and I'd make sure that the dog is comfortable with you handling his front paws WITHOUT the Dremel first.

Disel, who just turned a year, just started this as well. I have been handling his paws and dremeling him since we brought him home at 8 weeks. Now he's a pain about it. And like Duce his front nails grow very fast.

All I can say is just perservere. Don't make a big deal out of it. Just calmly and quietly continue to work. If he pulls his paw away, calmly pick it back up and work. Its does take longer and some days it will test my patience to the nth degree. Bu if you don't make a big deal out of it, then eventually he will get the hint that its just going to get done no matter what so there is no need to fuss.

LOL...one year old males. They will try you that's for sure! ;)

Are you guys still interested in tracking? Season is almost here! :)

When you do grind the nails, do you get them back on an angle? It seems like the quick will tend to shrink back into the nail more if you do. Also, maybe it's just me but the shorter you can get them, the less they seem to grow back as quick.

Re: Dremmel Help!

When we first started dremmeling he loved it. he got a treat at the end and there were no problems. he has no problems when i handle his paws without a dremmel. He likes the occasional paw rub!!! :p

My husband holds him and i dremmel. i angle them and try by best to keep the nail/quick short.

He turned one on Jan 1st and now he is king of the world!! :)

Re: Dremmel Help!

Akasha is horrible about having her nails done. She absolutely HATES the dremmel! I can mess with her nails all I want, but as soon as I bring out the dreaded dremmel, her delicate tootsies are now off limits It has taken alot of work and alot of treats but we have actually made some progress and two days ago I was able to do all four feet in one sitting. Of course it still took both my daughter and I to do it, but progress is progress.

What is really disgusting is the fact that Keil will come and lay down in front of us and hold out his paw, while we are doing Akasha's nails. He LOVES having his nails done. He lays on his back and totally relaxes while he gets his manicure :D One of these days I am going to paint his nails and see how he likes that :p

I painted Akasha's nails a nice hot pink last summer and my family thought I was "weird" and said I had WAY too much time on my hands. They have some nerve! :D Unfortunately my family has absolutley NO imagination Akasha was very proud of her hot pink nails :D :D
