Dry coat remedies?

Rocky's coat has been dryer than normal for awhile now. He gets a good food (Wellness) and regular brushings. Lately I've been giving him some omega-3 fish oil capsules. The capsules seem to have helped a little, but I wonder if there's more I can do. Thanks for any suggestions.

Sure is, in addition to what you already are doing, add a little Safflower Oil to his food. Another alternative is Peanut Oil. Both of them can be found in any grocery store and are excellent for the coat. I prefer (and do use) using the Safflower oil myself. It's a great natural source for vitamin E.

Kodi went through a phase where his skin was dry and his coat seemed coarse...... when bathing him I used an oatmeal based shampoo which seemed to help with his flaky skin. The oatmeal shampoo helped along with a change to a better quality food. Rocky's problem may be more food related, but I thought that I would add this in too about the shampoo.....

I feed our dogs flaxseed oil and vitamin E. When I first got Akasha she had a very dry coat. Her coat improved greatly once I started giving her the flaxseed and vitamin E. Neither Akasha nor Keil have had a problem since they have started taking the supplements.

Did your dogs take the supplements well? I tried "natural fish oil concentrate" (1,000 mg Omega-3) a while back, and Athena's diarrhea was positively explosive.
I was so shocked (she had this weird grin on her face afterward like she enjoyed it) that I never gave her another one!

Hmmm, we've just given Julius fish oil capsules that we got at Wal-Mart & he had no issues with them at all. Maybe Athena is sensitive to that amount or something...

It's been my experience with supplementing any kind of oil that you should build up to the dose you want to feed. Many dogs get diarrhea if they go from no oil to a full dose. If you build up gradually, there shouldn't be a problem unless your dog just can't tolerate the oil at all. Rakki's on fish oil and I ramped up to the higher dose too fast and knew about it ...now he's on the higher dose and is just fine, because I reduced it for a while and then increased it slowly.
