| Honey Question.... Okay, so I know that some people will add honey in with their apple cider vinegar or in with their veggie glop. Why is it suggested that it be raw? We have a big thing of organic honey but it is not raw. Would this be okay??? Brooke

| Hi Brooke- There's actually more B-complex vitamins, and amino acids in honey that hasn't been processed. Once it's heated and filtered, like most commercial honey, it loses its nutritional value. It's better for us to eat a raw apple, although a baked one may still have some nutrients, the raw one is better. Same thing with honey. If you buy it raw and use it raw, you're getting the real deal. ;) Best wishes - kathy |

| Thanks for the info. Where do you usually pick up "raw" honey other than at the person that owns a hive? Also, the honey is processed to last longer. What is the shelf life of raw honey? What about contaminents in this kind of honey? Anything known about dangers of using "raw" honey? |

| grisu - Obtaining honey from local harvesters is preferred; but I'm sure there are reputable bee-keepers running honest businesses. The concern with raw honey is for infants. Pediatricians are urging parents not to give honey to babies under 12 months of age. The spores in the honey that produce botulism are generally not a problem for healthy adults, however, a baby lacks beneficial bacteria in their immature intestinal system and ingestion of these spores can be devastating. I've also seen articles stating that raw honey is fine to give a baby. Personally, I would avoid giving it to an infant just to be on the safe side. Raw honey doesn't have a shelf life. Apparently as long as it's kept sealed it can last a long, long time. It produces some hydrogen peroxide therefore it won't spoil. It's been toted as "antibiotic, antiseptic, antifungal and antibacterial,... and a natural preservative". It does crystallize, but placing the jar in a sink or bowl of hot water will liquify it. I think the real "buzz" is we should all be eating raw honey! After reading all of those adjectives to describe it; it sounds like the perfect food! :D Best wishes - kathy |

| OK..I never have honey in the house, and guess I've never thbought much about it either for people or dogs...Kathy, since you are the Honey Queen :) what do you think about bee pollen? I've seen it touted at health food stores, farmers markets, & such - as being "the perfect food" and such. But because I'm a natural cynic, I don't tend to pay much attention to these claims. How similar is it to raw honey as far as composition, etc? I tried Googling it but came up with bazillion pages of people selling it, but couldn't find much real information. Sidenote - I can pick up bugs, rodents, snakes, spiders etc with my bare hands (as long as they're not poisonous.) But I was swarmed & badly stung when I was a kid by bees; I'm still real uncomfortable about them! Maybe that's why I don't like honey. :)

| Carina - With the bees we had in the yard during the late summer and fall, I should've considered being a keeper! ;) In the early days of raw feeding I had done more reading about raw honey, because I was looking to mix the ACV with it. But here's an article from the Natn'l Council Against Health Fraud that you might find interesting. There's also a number of articles cited that are related to the topic. http://www.ncahf.org/articles/a-b/beepollen.html Gotta go for now. We're meeting our Tracking guru at 9:30 this a.m. We're going to run the regulation track distance with age! kathy |

| Thanks Kathy! Good thing I'm a natural cynic...good grief, 50% fecal material? Yum. And I knew honey was bee vomit. Another reason I don't like the stuff. I try not to think too hard about where milk comes from and what nature intended it for too. :p

| Well I'm off to search for some raw honey to mix in with Julius' apple cider vinegar. We're going to go to the health food store since I want to pick up some stuff there for myself. Blue corn chips...yum! And also a small bag of almonds for the veggie glop. :) Brooke

Hi Jaime - Thank you for contributing to this thread, and I don't intend to come across like I know it all, because I certainly don't! But, the raw honey is available in glass jars. You are right, it does appear pasty, (it's called crystallizing), but placing the jar, (or tub) in some hot water will liquify it. I just wanted t clarify this for those that may be shopping for raw honey. Best wishes - kathy |

| Yup, we saw it at the health food store today & it looked almost creamy. Kind of like a honey butter & it was in a jar. But....we didn't get it because it was SO expensive. I'm going to shop around...:p Brooke
