Nutro Natural Large Breed vs Nutro Lamb and Rice???

Ok after almost 3 weeks on the nutro Large breed, my pup has really started to get dry skin and is itching like crazy!!! I am going to try the Lamb and Rice, do i really need to do a slow switch over since its the same "brand" ?? I gave him just a little bit of the Lamb and Rice and it must be pretty stinky stuff because the first thing he did was try to roll in it!! It was kind of funny actually LOL. I am really not sure what else it could be other that the food. He is very itchy though because when i barely even touch him he starts itching like crazy and kind of "chews" (for lack of a better word) at himself. Any ideas what to do next??? And should i change him over slowly?? Thanks in advance!!

Geez, if the food affected him that badly that fast, I'd throw the rest away. How was he before he went on the large breed?

He had a little dry skin then but not as bas as it is now, I haven't given the Large breed to him today at all. I did give him a bath with the milk bath shampoo hoping it would relieve some of his itching, he just has TONS of dander and so much that when i would Scratch his back you could see where my fingers went down it. I am hoping i can find the cause of this soon i feel bad for the poor guy:( It has to be driving him crazy. I am not exactly sure what he was being fed before, the man that had him suposedly "rescued" the momma, didn't know she was pregnant and she had puppies, only 3 were born from this litter. I did get to see his brother and he didnt look to bad as far as the dry skin goes but neither did this guy till i put him on the large breed. Thanks for the input mmgy. we will see how he is in a couple weeks-a month. He goes back to the vet on the 6th of November so if it hasnt started to get better, we will see what she thinks.

dont bath your pup too much.... it really isnt to unusual for young puppys to be ichy and scratch and dusty looking.. especially if they have been outside then after you got they are inside there puppy coat also doesnt have the oils as the coat he will soon have

Thanks for the reminder lblax. This is the first bath he has had, one reason for the bath was the dry skin, other was because my son who is not quiet 2 yet thought it would be fun to pour his juice on the dog and he was sticky LOL Some times i think its easier to train the dogs than it is the kids LOL:D :D

Lamb is not the end all and be all and many dogs are allergic to lamb, too. Take him off the large breed puppy, puppy food all together and put him on adult food (puppy food is not necessary). First try the Nutro NATURAL CHOICE Chicken and Rice and see if he does okay on that. Only if he does not do well on Chicken, then try him on lamb. But you have to give it at least 6 weeks, to see.

And others are right...only bathe puppy when they absolutely need it! Overbathing dries their skin out and can cause itchiness. Also have him combed for fleas and scaled for mange just to be on the safe side! ;)

I read somewhere that the lamb and rice forula contains trace amounts of Pheno Barbital which I think is used to eauthanize animals, where as the Nutro Natural did not have it .

Samanthac is right about the lamb. I was feeding Nutro Natural Lamb & Rice and my dog Dylan was scratching like crazy! Turned out he was allergic to the lamb. He now eats Wellness (the chicken kind) and does very well on it. I think Nutro Natural makes a chicken & rice formula. You might want to give that a try

Thanks Everyone for you help...

I was going to try the nutro lamb and rice but first decided to finish off the puppy formula and i also mixed it with what i feed my other dogs (pro pac) they do great on it and it would be easier to feed them all the same thing, he isn't itching as much as before, and it seems like he isn't as "flakey" either. I had also been giving him small amounts of the Natural Balance roll each day too and have stopped that, He doesn't miss having it in his dish so i figured i would stop that also. So i am not sure if it was the Nutro or the Natural Balance. He gets enough treats that he doesnt need the Food rolls to be happy. Thanks again everyone i will let you know how it is in a few more weeks.

Alot of puppies have itchy dry skin and it may have nothing to do with the food (although there are better foods out there). Bella was pretty itchy until she was 5-6 mnths old...and she was on innova at the time (I think)...
