Feeding amount question: CANIDAE

Just curious to find out if everyone follows the back of the bag and go by the amounts prescribed.

It only goes up to 100 lbs.

I feed one dog(100lbs) 1 cup twice a day even though the serving recommendation on the back says I should be doubling what I give him now.

2nd dog is 100 lbs and I feed him 6 cups a day. Once again the serving recommendation says 4 cups a day.

3rd dog is 140 lbs. Strange eater....some days he will eat 2 cups....other days he will eat 10 and want more!?!?!?

All three are in great condition. No fat on any of them. Great energy.

Wondering if I should just stay with what's obviously working for my three, or if I'm wasting food and perhaps overworking the dogs systems???

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you....

If they are puppies I think you should give them what they want as long as they aren't fat...

Hey mom...If it ain't broke don't fix it. :)

I agree with Burnsway...your dogs are going to have differing needs & requirements. When I fed kibble, I remember thinking the RDAs were rather high...IIRC my last Rottie (115lbs & lean) got no more than three cups per day, about half what was recommended.

The first dog(100 lbs) is 7 years old.

The second dog(100 lbs) is 2 years old.

The third(140 lbs) is 10 months old.

In addition to the kibble I give them some canned mackrel, some carrots (after being cuisinarted) and some dog treats, some crushed garlic, and some vitamin c. I don't really keep track, I just give it to them about once a week.

Just hope I'm not hurting them by over-doing it.

The first two look hungry constantly. My rott is SO FOOD MOTIVATED, it befuddles me!!

Thank you once again.

If you are over doing it, you will be able to tell by the amount of poop amd its thickness and consistancy. Also you should beable to tell by the way they look. ALL DOGS ARE FOOD MOTIVATED!!!! No different then a pet fish you can give them all the food they want and find them floating dead next morning. I feel most animals just will eat and eat till they drop!!!

If I let my 6 month old eat as much as she wanted I would be feeding her 24/7 roflmao!!!!!.....

I think that if the dogs are happy and healthy - keep doing what you are doing.

All dogs are different, and I truely beleive that the feeding recommendations on the back of dog food bags are simple recommendations.

All 3 of my dogs eat differently, and always have. For example: I have an 18 month old male rottweiler(120 lbs) who will only eat once a day and only eats about 3 cups. I have a 9 month old female rottweiler (95 lbs) who also will only eat once a day who will only eat 1.5 cups. My 3 month old rott/husky puppy(30 lbs) eats 3/4 cup 3 times a day. All of them eat Canidae, and they are all a healthy weight.

So find what works for your doggies, and stick with it :)

Canidae recommended doubling the amount for puppies and working dogs.

I feed my two rescue rottys (8 1/2 months) dry canidae. I just fill their bowl when it's empty. Usually a cup each twice a day.
I have a female senior german shepherd (she will be 14 next month!!) who likes it too. My male axels poop is never solid. Ever. Last nite I cooked them some liver, and rice and poured it with the broth over thier canidae. They get so excited when they see mommy take thier doggie dish, and put it up on the counter by the "people" pots and pans..........they know they are in for a treat when i start mixing and stirring.
I have more fun cooking for them that i do my husband!!! (They say thank you with thier body language!!!ha ha)
