Canidae is not an option

I have been reading how alot of people use and love Canidae. I can't seem to find it local so I was checking online. With the cost of shipping to AZ a 40# bag is going to cost me $55-$65, I cant afford that with having to feed 2 dogs. I have been feeding Nutro Natural Choice, I recently switched from Lamb and Rice to Large Breed and one of my dogs has the nastiest smelling breath. I don't know if it's from the food, he didn't have that problem on the Lamb and Rice, but he wasn't crazy about eating it either. Can someone PLEASE give me some advice or recommend a good food that I can buy at either Petsmart or Petco???? I have heard that Nutro is a fairly good food. Oh...one more thing. I also mix different things in for him. Yogurt, brown rice, vita gravy, mixed veggies, cooked ground turkey (not all at the same time). He is recovering from Valley Fever and he needs to gain weight, with giving kibble alone, he wont eat.

Well, I could ship you a bag all the way from North Carolina for $49.-50., so surely someone closer could do it for less. If you go back to researching online, check out options for 5 bags. Most ground freight companies offer breaks at 200 lbs. For instance, around the southeast I can ship 5 bags for less freight than four individual bags.

Canidae is biggest in the west, seems someone could order it in for you.

Sorry, can't recommend anything at Petsmart, and don't know anything about Petco.

Here's a list of 37 stores that sell Innova in Arizona: http://www.naturapet.com/display.php...ame=&x=15&y=13 I don't know if any are close to you but I can reccommend Innova if you can but it locally.

PetCo. usually carries Wysong, Bil-Jac, Nature's Recipe, Royal Canin(which I also believe PetsMart has started to carry) and Sensible Choice. Out of all of them I'm not sure which is the best, but I'm sure some of our other members could chime in with thier thoughts on which one they think is best.

I feed Royal Canin Natural Blend, which is available at Petco (it's a Whole Dog Journal Top Ten food).

I also feed Royal Canine Natural Blend - no extraneous grooming necessary for Ben aside from regular brushing...his coat is gorgeous, eyes bright and clear, everything doing well.

He gets 2 cups a day, I beleive the bag calls for feeding an 80 pound dog 3-4 cups a day...if I did that, he'd be fat!

Where in Arizona are you located? I am in Glendale and purchase Canidae right up the street - I also know of a store in the NE valley that carries it as well. I pay $28.99 for a 40 lb bag...let me know where you are and I'll see if I can help you out.

I'm in Avondale...someone sells it in Glendale that's great!! Can you let me know of the store and where it is? I have only checked stores in my area and most people look at me like I'm talking in a foreign language I'm not an expert at dog food nutrition but everyone on the forum seems to think that food is the next best thing since sliced bread so I would like to try it. I am under the impression that it is a better food than Nutro?

Wow...I just saw that I can get Innova here too. So now I have to decide if I try Innova or Canidae. I know Innova has fruits and veggies but Canidae doesn't. So do you guys have suggestions as to which one I should try, I dont know which is a better choice? Right now I'm feeding my 4 1/2 month old Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy and my 2 1/2 yr. old Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed. Thank you everyone for helping me find better food for my furkids !!!!

I get my Canidae at The Stock Shop (6615 West Thunderbird Ave) - they sell Innova as well. Actually, I work there - so if you stop in, ask for me and bring your dog with you too! :) Best of luck on your decision...it's a toughie I know!

Some dogs can't or don't like Canidae so you may want to try the Innova first and see how your dogs do on it. Remember it will take a month or two to see the complete and long term results of whatever you do try feeding.

I've been feeding Canidae for a couple years, and I can get it at a store just five blocks from my house. However, Ilsa has been having ongoing soft stool for a couple months, so I wanted to try her on a single protein source. So we are starting on Royal Canin Natural Blend Holistic today, which is actually less convenient for me because I have to drive to the 'burbs to get it!

It's really up to you, but Canidae is for all stages of life. I've tried my dogs on various foods and have always gone back to Canidae. I was feeding my Reba California Natural reduced calorie, but now have her on Canidae Platnum for Seniors and she is doing really well on it and she loves it. Sensi is on the regular Canidae and he never has any problems with it.

Both Canidae and Innova are considered better foods than Nutro. Which your particular dog does better with/will eat is individual matter. To just check the basic of flarvor tolerance you may find that one or the other or both has sample packs available. Also some stores have an if your dog won't eat it, it is returnable policy. Nutro may have more things added for taste (not necessarily a good thing--so does MCDonald's to entice children) so it may add to difficulty in making switch esp. with a dog that already doesn't like plain kibble. If your dog can tolerate cheese, a little parmesan sprinkled on top may help. Others will go for a little broth added, or some canned food added. Some of us do part kibble part raw food. The makers of Innova also make Californial Natural and Healthwise which have fewer ingredients if your dog is the allergic type. (Healthwise comes in one pound packs if you want to try it... they are also convenient for travel).

I have been concerned about allergies lately and found that I could get Natural Balance Duck and Potato that someone recommended here at both Petco and Minipetmart locally.
