| probably part of the reason for the dry skin is due to the fact i don't brush maverick like i should.. i know, bad owner:o:). with all the things i have to do during the day, it's not one thing i remember to do. i'll start brushing him more often and try the oil and see how it works. he seems to be doing ok on the canidae, he obviously likes the taste, and, like i said, he only poops once or twice so i really don't have THAT much to clean up, not like i did with the other foods. thanks for the tips.

| I don't think brushing is the answer to a healthy shiny coat. I do brush regularly so I'm not a good example but I do know people that only bursh once or twice a month and sometimes not even that often and their dogs coats do look good. I've had dogs in the past that I didn't bursh regularly and they looked fine. |

| but what about the dry skin? wouldn't brushing stimulate the oil glands? well at least i don't have to feel bad about not brushing him. but i probably should to help with the shedding. problem is, i don't know any other rottweilers so i can't compare his coat to another to see how his compares. his coat could be just fine i wouldn't even know it! :) i just know i didn't really notice a difference when i changed dog food.

| Yes, burshing would stimulate him but all the burshing will not compensate for a healthy skin and coat. You should be able to look at him and ask yourself, is he shinny? Does he look healthy? I just take it for granted that a person can recognise a healthy dog when you see one but it's hard to judge your own dog which you see every day. I think adding the oil to his diet will be the best thing you can do and see how that goes in a month or so. |

| Sorry for jumping in late. My boy is not full grown and he is about 6-7 months, but liks someone else said when I feed him you really would think that I was starving him he eats like he has never seen food before. The one thing that I did notice is his coat. We switched to canide and started using fish oil and he is just WOW 100% difference. Sorry cant talk much I am getting ready to leave this place and go back home so I am really busy. |

| brianbat420, since your pup is so young, you should be feeding him the puppy ration still. as i stated earlier in this thread, maverick is getting 5 - 6 cups and he's 16 mo. actually, the whole point of this thread was to find out when i should cut back his food to the adult ration stated on the bag. that's probably why your pup look skinny because it sounds like you haven't been feeding him enough! as i sit and look at maverick, his coat is shiny..but really it doesn't look any different than before. maybe it's just not something i paid that much attention to or maybe it's been shiny all along:). and yes, he looks very healthy, even the vet said so so i guess i'm doing something right. :). at any rate, thanks for the advice of the oil. i'll try it out.
