Do you feed a diet that the forums might frown upon?

Don't feel the need to post the food that you feed. Do you feed a diet that has been bashed here in the forums?

Personally, I do. I won't post it because I don't want to be bothered with the comments I'll receive. The breeder has been feeding this diet for years. Her dogs have done very well. Parker was already eating it when I got him, so I had to continue feeding it.

He's done so well on it that I haven't felt the need to switch. His coat gleams, his eyes are bright, he didn't have weird growth spurts, carring good weight and is maturing very nicely.

Keep in mind that it's not a horrible food, it's balanced and has good quality. My veterinarian is very happy with Parker's growth and development.

Is there anyone else out there that doesn't comment on these things? :)

My puppy eats about 4% of his body weight in raw each day. Split 50-50 between a prepared mix (Oma's Pride) and chicken necks. He also gets a squirt of salmon oil each meal along with a raw egg twice a week. What I provide for his diet is pretty healthy. What OScar provides for himself is not. He loves to eat the mulch in our gardens, and tear at the ivy in the back yard. He has an ungodly love of bananas, pesto sauce, and Kix cereal. I guess all in all I am not ashamed of what he eats but occasionally embarassed by his unabashed love for red cedar mulch.

Ilsa has eaten both potato chips and Nerds candy in the past week. Does that count? ;)

I am right there with you Trishb,

I feed Duce a brand of dog food that frequently gets bashed here on the forum. He too is healthy, has a great coat, and the vet is pleased with his growth.

I have never got caught up trying to find that perfect food for my dog. I just started using the food my vet recommended and it has worked well for my boy.

Sometimes I laugh when i look at these really expensive dog foods because they have got every vitamin, mineral and food group in them. I sure don't always eat that well so why should my dog have too!;)

All kidding aside, while I do feed one of the politically correct foods, I see nothing wrong with feeding something like Nutro Natural Choice, Pro Plan, or some of the others in that tier. We are all food snobs here, or as my husband likes to call me, dog Nazis, but really one of those foods is going to provide good nutrition. But if you are feeding a supermarket sweetened glop like Kibbles 'n' Bits, you should reconsider your choice.

While I do feed one of the premium food brands, Sparkle also enjoys the occasional Milk Bone. I know it's probably made of horse feet or something, but she likes em :)

I'll go as far as to say that I don't buy it in a supermarket. But I won't go any further. ;)

Until Parker demonstrates to me that his needs have changed (i.e. energy levels change, coat changes, strength, stamina, etc.) I'm going to leave him on the diet he's on.

I do add yogurt for digestion and the added fat for his coat. He does enjoy carrots, banannas, peanuts and anything else I'm snacking on.

I just didn't want the other 'slammed foods people' to think that they were alone! ;) :D

Nerds?! Too funny. We took Shea to an ice cream store for her very own ice cream cone for her sixth birthday last Tuesday. I have fed Shea (back in my learning days) Menard's brand dog chow, I cringe when I think about it now. She has also gotten Purina, Purina One, California Natural, and finally Wellness. Shea loves Wellness. My husband and I hate it, it stinks to high heaven and makes her breath noxious. Thank goodness for Greenies.

Okay, I'm the queen of dog food snobs, and don't mind admitting it!! See, it's even partly in my signature, dfc=dog food chick (as I'm known about town).

But here's the rub. One, y'all may be feeding what I think is crap, but at least you're paying attention. And two, as soon as you start supplementing, you completely alter the outcome. And, if your dogs ever do have a problem, you know what to do. What irks me to the nth degree is people that feed based solely on ADVERTISING. Like my cousin who feeds Beneful, because the commercial says he should. He's fixing to get an education.

And there are NO guarantees. The healthiest marathoners have been known to drop dead from heart attacks at age 35. It's all about the odds.

We all started somewhere. Personally, I owned 500 shares of Ralston Purina stock until Nestle bought them. I figured I ought to get some benefit from all the food I was buying from them.;)

I understand that it works for your dogs. It is a mildly acceptable food however I could not in good conscious give Iams my money. Here are some links to a well know investigation done in March. They claimed to have changed their ways and dropped the lab that was doing these tests but do you believe them?

i also feed a bashed brand. but unfortunately its the best-quality one available in the area. and its the only one my shih tzu can keep down. and not be constantly throwing up bile. bash Iams all you like, it works for me. and until we get a decent pet store, i doubt that we will find something better. heck the local feed store just DIScontinued EaglePack, and they won't order in for me.

I don't feed a bashed brand but I finally came to the conclusion (after 6 mnths) that although Canidae's ingredients may be great, Belal hardly thrived on it - coat has always been good but her skin was rather dry and I had a hard time getting any weight on her (she just seemed to poop alot)...Switched to 50% prepared raw (frozen) and a higher fat higher protien kibble and the results are noticeable (less poop, not itching/scratching and has gained some muscle). Of course we are excercising etc as well...

I am not an expert in canine nutrition but food is really only a part of the equation...
