| What is the best food(In japan) Ok I know that people have asked this question many times before but my situation is a little different. I am in the Air Force and I am being sent overseas to japan. And the food that is listed below is the ONLY choice that I have because I am sure that most company's will not ship to APO addresses. | Nutro Natural Choice WOW !!! You really do have a crappy choice of foods in Japan.:( In my opinion the best choice of food from that list is the Nutro Natural Choice, either the lamb and rice or the chicken and rice. I do not like the Large Breed,,,,there is corn in it. You could also add some goodies in once in awhile such as yogurt, cottage cheese, egg, canned mackerel, fruits and veggies and some leftover meat. Your dog should do fine on the Nutro Natural Choice. Good-luck! Gina

| Definitely Nutro Natural Choice. If they were to run out, then Iams, then Purina ONE. Why don't you contact Canidae? They export heavily into the east, and it just might be available there. Also, supplementing with home prep would help immensely.

| I would go with the Nutro Natural Choice and feed half that and half raw lean hamburger from the BX. You should also supplement with human grade bonemeal and vitamins B, C, and E. You should be able to buy most of that on base except for maybe the bonemeal but lots of suppliers will ship to APOs. Good luck over there. |

| No one would tuck a 50 pound sack of food into a diplomatic pouch for you? ;) :D Or everytime someone new is expected to arrive ask them to bring some good dogfood??? :D :D I would first check with both Canidae and the company that makes California Natural, Innova etc., also Flint River Ranch (which only sells by shipping food) and see if any will send there, or if any already have their food for sale in Japan even if under a different lable. I am not sure where "wellness" brand fits into dog food spectrum, but it is now available mail order via Foster and Smith which probably ships anywhere. Steves Raw Food makes a freeze dried version that is very light weight (also very very very expensive, esp for a big eater like a male rottie) and might be easier to ship for that reason. And there might be other less expensive freeze dried foods. Also consider a natural or raw food diet following a book recipe so you get the nutritional balance correct. a book by Pitcairn DVM has recipes that are intended as supplementing kibble and are not as hard to prepare as a total home made diet. I am a little concerned that supplementing just hamburger would be too high on protein and or fat. Of the choices I agree with Nutro Natural Choice as first choice. What is he eating now (and how much can you carry with you)? did the class go? |

| Well right now he is currently switching from pedigree pup to candine. He was on the pup food when we got him and we didnt want to mess with him so we waited untill now to switch him. My wife just bought his first bag of Candine. And believe me I can ship a bag with me or 2 but my question is how long does the food stay good? I am going to be in a very humid enviroment and I was just wondering because I can ship a couple of bags with me with my furniture ( :) ) I just dont want to send it and it just go bad. I also wrote Candine and asked them if they shiped over there and if they have any sellers over there so I am crossing my fingers otherwise he is going to have to go on the Nutro with a little raw. The only thing is that I really dont like the idea of Raw diet. I really dont want him to get sick or get some bacteria from uncooked food that is just my biggest worries Thank you all and cross your fingers that they sell Candine over there;) |

| You can supplement with some people food cooked rather than raw. But you have to be careful to avoid certain things that are dangerous for dogs, like onions, chocolate etc. My dog prefers cooked food and will eat lots of things like carrots cooked that he will not touch when raw. I live in a rainforest area and can keep current 20 pound bag and a couple spare 20 pound bags without trouble. I do think that when I use a 40 pound bag it may start to go stale before I reach the end, but the new still sealed smaller bags seem to do well. I keep the bags (sealed until in use) in a galvanized garbage can with a lid. Canidae has a plasticized liner or some such thing that seems to protect the food pretty well. My guess is it would be even better in in something like a closed old refrigerator with some baking soda to absorb odors and moisture, rather than the can which is good against racoons etc. but not airtight. If transporting from Pheonix you might wrap in plastic garbage bags before leaving so that they are in an extra protective layer put on while still in a dry environment. |
