Problems with the switch to Innova?

Our puppies have had really bad gas and their stools have been very loose for the past several days. I have slowly switched them over to Innova from the Nutro Natural and a couple of days ago they stopped getting any Nutro.

Could their loose stools and gas be from the Innova? Will it stop once their system is used to getting just Innova? The puppies did just get over being sick last week and I am wondering if maybe their system is still not quite back to normal. I am not ready to give up on the Innova just yet and I will continue to feed it for a little while longer. What can I do to help with the loose stools and gas?

I have been doing alot of research on the benefits of feeding raw and I am considering making the switch. I want to learn more before I make my final decision though.

I think Innova is quite a rich food with a number of different protein sources. Back when I fed kibble, I attempted to switch to Innova (from Canidae) a couple of times, but gave up because of the loose stool and gas. Perhaps I tried switching too fast, or didn't give it enough time - but I have heard this about Innova from other people.

Adding high quality yoghurt, like a couple of spoonfuls with each meal, should help. Also canned pumpkin (plain, not the stuff for pie filling) should help with diarrhea. Perhaps 1/2 cup with each meal.

It takes awhile for some dogs to get used to a new food. I can usually expect soft stools to last through most of the first bag. Canidae or California Natural might be better choices if the Innova is the problem, but try the yogurt, pumpkin and be patient for a little while longer.

I went ahead and added some yogurt to their food today. I will get some pumpkin and try that also. We are just over 1/2 through the first bag of Innova and I will get one more bag after this one and see how things go. If between the pumpkin and yogurt the gas and loose stools don't stop then I will see about changing their food. I am still going to do a little more research into feeding raw and see if that might possibly be an option for us.

Thank you for the information about the pumpkin and yogurt:)

I have heard from many that Innova has caused more gas than other foods. We have not had a problem with it, and I'm bad when we switch foods, I just finish one bag and start the next. ;)

I feed 40% Kibble and 60% raw diet. About a month ago I switch from feeding Eaglepack Holistic to Innova and didn't have any trouble with the switch. I switched her over a period of 7 days and the only thing I did notice is a little gas in the beginning. All of that time she was getting low fat yogurt three days a week and had been (and still is) getting veggies as a regular part of her diet.

The only other thing I would say is that not every dog does the best on any one food. It is possible that something in Innova does not agree with your pups. You could also try giving them a Pepcid AC half an hour before feeding and see if that helps also. It's sold over the counter and is mild enough to just soothe the stomach and may be all that's needed to get them used to the new food.

Well I know that Bella is one who will just not tolerate Innova although it was my first choice of foods for her. She does very well on Canidae so Canidae it is!!!
