Which do you have, longer hair rott, or shorter hair?

Just realized that rommel doesn't have hair as short as some rotts that i have seen and compared to others its not as long. We did buy him in state from a good breeder. Whats interesting is that im wondering where he got it from, neither parents had hair on the longer side. I know this is one of the things that in the show ring would tend to diaqualify him but thank goodness he's not a show dog!
- we love him just as much! Just am curious to know how many out there have rotts considered to have longer hair.

My trainer has a brother and sister. Male is quite correct and did very well in the show ring. Female threw a long coat and is just a sweet pet. Her coat is very soft and downy...more like fur than dog hair.

Maxie has wavy hair, it is short but not typical short and she has longer hair on the back of her legs and rear end. And her hair is as soft as fur. Both her parents have the typical rott short course hair and out of a litter of 11, only the two girls had the wavy slight long hair. I think it gives Maxie personality.

It sounds like you just described rommel, lol ;) . Okay so it happens more than i thought. I spoke with my cousin about his friend who breeds, and he said it is a hit and miss thing. It is very soft and cudly hair, he reminded me of a little black bear cub when he was a tiny puppy.

If you click on the www button at the bottom of my post, there's a couple of pictures of Cooper - definitely a long haired Rottweiler!
I'm going to get some better pictures of him. His coat is like samanthac describes...very thick and soft. And totally impractical!

I've got a long-haired too. Shea's hair isn't as long as Cooper's, maybe 2 inches of waves. Long-haired rotties are extra special!

Actually, I think Cooper's was still growing out from his summer cut there. He got a huge mane over the winter; we've been brushing giant tumbleweeds of fluff from him for weeks.
Sometime in the next couple of weeks I'm going to try posting some really good photos to show how fluffy he is now! I'll try getting a good butt shot. :)

Dash has both, long and wavy on her back and short short on her sides, since she had the puppies it almost looks like her sides have been shaved, and a lot less shedding, Its great:)

hmm, Amber's coat sounds just like Rommel's & Maxies. It's definitely longer than Smidgen's was (the strand that I found floating in my coffee this morning was close to 2 inches long) but she's by no means a long haired rottie. And she's got that 1940's marcelled look going on over her butt :).

Amberini's a rescue, though, & most likely a BYB dog so I can't comment on her parents' coat. Still I've found this slightly longer fur to be much more invasive & annoying than Smidgen's "correct" coat was. More garnish rather than condiment :).

Casey's coat is just as tight and smooth as can be.... in fact when I'm pawing her over looking for whatever, it's almost impossible to part her coat it's so tight, smooth and short.

Dru's coat is very short and tight. It is so thick, but she is really blowing her coat right now.

Tumbleweeds all over the house. YIKES!!!!

Gus used to have some wavy hair on the top of his back, but he's 3 now and it seems to have disappeared. I'm not sure what was up with that.

Some clues if you have a long haired rott is if the ears have fringes. Do people confuse your dog with a bernese? If the dog doesn't have the ear fringe and the coat doesn't look like a Bernese, then you just might have an actual correct coat. A rottweiler is supposed to have a MEDIUM length coat. Here is what the standard says about coat:

Coat
Outer coat is straight, coarse, dense, of medium length and lying flat. Undercoat should be present on neck and thighs, but the amount is influenced by climatic conditions. Undercoat should not show through outer coat. The coat is shortest on head, ears and legs, longest on breeching. The Rottweiler is to be exhibited in the natural condition with no trimming. Fault--Wavy coat. Serious Faults--Open, excessively short, or curly coat; total lack of undercoat; any trimming that alters the length of the natural coat. Disqualification--Long coat.

The rottweiler coat is getting shorter and slicker. They are not supposed to have a dobe coat!
