help he is not eating....

hello everyone!

I have my Louie for 6 days now & he is 7weeks old. At first, he did eat his food but yesterday he barely touch it. Last night I left him his meal for the night. I got up and he did not touch it at all. So, I gave him 5 strip of beef jerky, he ate those fassst.:p
Now, I don't know if I should switch to another brand of food. Or should I just wait it out? I think he knows if he wait I will eventaully give him the good stuffs.

Please help,

Jodyce

What are you feeding? If nothing else, mix his food with a little bit of something good ( gravy from canned dog food, soup broth, etc.)

I took him to the vet on Monday and he was exam and given his shots plus the heartworm pill. The vet say he is healthy, he weigh 10.3lbs and growing.

Right now he is eating Authority puppy food and I mix it with Pedigree. But he still will not eat it. This worry me. I am thinking of switching him to Iams and buy some gravy to add some flavor to it. What do you think?

Does that stuff call "no go" work for them not peeing on the floor? I saw it at Petsmart.

Are you guys still feeding him scraps from the table? I can't say I'd reccomend feeding beef jerky, probably has too much salt.

Yes, he does get some scraps but all the time. If beef jerky is bad for him then I will only give it to him once a week.

I am thinking of of switching him to Pro Plan. Is that a good brand?

There's so many good kibbles...Iams isn't very good, if you do a search on "puppy food" using the search button on top of the page, you'll find LOTS of info on diet. I don't know about ProPlan.

Instead of buying gravy, etc, try finding a canned food that he likes, mixing it with kibble, and offering it to him 4-5 times a day. If he doesn't eat it, take it up within 15 minutes & try again later. You can also buy chicken or ground beef, cook it, and add it to his food...just DON'T give him cooked bones. Cooked meat is probably better for him than canned food anyhow. :)

Do they really give heartworm pills to puppies that young?

I have no clue about something that stops them from peeing in the house, training and patience is the key to house breaking! I don't think there's any short cuts there.

Hi Jodyce,

I don't know too much about pro-plan, so I'll leave that question to someone who does.

I do know that beef jerky is not a healthy food item. If you are to give him scraps, why not give him some banana, or sliced apples? Something a bit healthier? Just stick around here and you'll learn so much about what's good for them and what's not. :D

I've been feeding Canidae, and it lasts about a month. I buy the 40 lb. bag. It's slightly cheaper here than Iams or Eukanuba! And it's by far a better food in my opinion! :)

Yes, they do. I don't know if it's ok or not, but Mercedes got some at 7 weeks, and still gets one a month. But, as for being good for them, I don't know.

As far as food goes, I wouldn't suggest Pro Plan or Science Diet. Mercedes was on both of these and didn't like them and diddnt do anything for her except give her loose stool.

Canidea is what she is on know. No problems with it. Her coat is shiny and seems to be nutritionally compleat!!!:)

But what you feed her is totally up to you. All I can say is take the suggestions that are given to you into consideration.

Lisa,

Thanks for your input. Maybe, I should try giving him Canidae. I was reading over the forum and a lot of people mention Canidae.
I just want him to be healthy and strong and give the best for him. Nay suggestion would greatly be appreciate. :D

Stop the table scraps and people food. Special treats should be for training only and not dinner substitutes. If he's getting roast beef, he is certainly not going to welcome his kibble regardless of brand.

I agree, stir in a little canned product (no more than a small spoonful) with some water. He won't starve himself to death. Stop the scraps.

I am putting a stop to the table scrap right now. This may be a silly question but where can I buy Canidae? I try to locate it at pet store in my neighborhood but can't find it.

Any suggestions?

They have a website. www.canidae.com

On the site there is a store locator, which you can enter your area code into and it will tell you which stores in your area should carry it.
Canidae Store Locater We also managed to find another per supply store in our area that carries and isn't on their list.

If you can't find a local dealer, try asking your local pet store if they can stock it or at least order some specifically for you. I believe you can also order it from various online pet supply sites and have it shipped to you (though I imagine S&H could be a bit stiff)

This is a very good kibble for dogs, lot of real meat content rather than corn meal and filler that you'll find in most of the commercial brands you get in the grocery store. A good rule of thumb for checking the quality of dog food is to look at the list of ingredients on the bag, if the first couple aren't meat, it's probably not good food.

I did went on the canidae.com site and find a store close to my home. I don't understand why they do not carry it in regular pet store. Not trying to be cheap or anything but how much does it cost? I heard it was good for the coat as well. Is this true?

So, I can go ahead and buy him the adult food or stick to puppy food? Can I get him some can food as well? :p

thanks,

jodyce
