Well that certainly wouldn't hurt...could your dog just be shedding, it's that time of year...?
You don't give many details - is it severe, is there a rash or dry skin, how old is your dog, what are you feeding...? Underactive thyroid can cause thinning, and probably several other causes.

Fish oil is a fine supplement, no harm in giving it.

I give my female one fish oil capsule a day, it has really helped with the dry skin. Its not that expensive, and your vet should have at least a 30 day supply you can buy.

:)

Fish Oil Capsules are one of the best things you can give a dog I feed both that and Safflower Oil every day.

My rott is 10 mos old her name is Dixie. She is a new addition to out family and right now the only Rott we have. I have owned several Boxers and other short hair dogs but this is our first Rott. She does have some flaking and the owners we got her from said it was a skin allergy but honestly it looks like mange to me. The previous owner assures me it isn't and that she has been to the vet and states its from the bedding in her pen. We have been bathing her in a shampoo with iodine and the previous owner assures us it will be gone in a couple weeks. I am just wondering if there is something that might aid in the healing and may prevent it from returning, we plan to bring her inside but are waiting for it to clear up.

I would definately take her in to see my own vet and see what he/she thinks should be done. Sad but true, some people will say anything to find a home for a dog. She really needs to get looked at and brought into the house. Keeping her outside is exposing her to more problems and denying her human companionship which she very much should have at this age.

I find it odd your vet says its from her bedding....? That's weird. If it's flaking or she has a rash, don't they need to look at it under a microscope or black light or something? Could it be flea allergies? Staph? Ringworm? Some sort of skin parasite? A little dry skin can happen from cold dry air, cheap food, etc, and fish oil is certainly good; so is feeding her a can of mackerel or salmon 1-2 times a week. If it's a food allergy, perhaps just changing her food to a premium/allegenic food might be the answer. There's so many things that can cause dry itchy skin, I would think it better to find out what the underlying cause is. Could even be too many baths...

And absolutely she should be inside with you, that's where dogs belong. :) Why is her having itchy skin preventing her from being inside? Get her an old clean blanket to sleep on, or a nice bed, and get her in!

And yeah, whoever is getting rid of a 10 month old young dog with a skin condition doesn't sound like the most trustworthy source of information.

Carina, it was the previous owner that told her it was from the bedding. I was the one that suggested she take the dog to her vet to get his opinion directly.

Oh OK...I re-read that, I guess you're right!
Ditto on the vet to find out what the problem is, then.

The only time we put Dixie in the pen right now is when we go to bed. The rest of the time she is out,we live in the country so she has lots of room to roam. As far as letting her inside right now I have two other smaller dogs, Pomeranians and right now they are a little leary of Dixie but they are staring to get use to her.

I seen the paper work from the vet that the previous owner went to, and they also said that as far as the bedding was concerened that they had bedding in the pen and dog house but that Dixie kept pulling it out. She also says that if I am not satisfied that I can take her back....yeah right like that would happen...I just want to make sure that I am doing all that I can to help her and if there is something that can help in the processes then I want to do it. Also she hasn't seemed to be scratching as much today. So I am hoping we are doing the right thing. I work some very strange hours and am getting close to days off so I will be making them all 3 vet appointments then.
