gave chicken wing for first time

took ivy (9 weeks old) 5 minutes to eat that chicken wing... guess i have a barf'er on hand?

i only wanna feed raw meats as snacks though. being a novice, i'll stick with premium kibble...

i bought her salmon patties which i'm going to feed once a week, rotating with raw fish (sardines, mackerel)...

question.. when people say feed raw egg, do they mean crack the egg open and feed them the white and yolk, or do they mean just throw an egg in the food bowl and let them eat away?

i did a search on egg, but u can imagine how many threads came up with the word egg in them

It depends. I've tried giving Kiara a whole egg uncracked and she just sniffed and played with it.
If I give her one i'll crack it over her food, but give no shell. Some people give the shell mixed in the BARF diet.
I also sometimes give her boiled eggs without the shell.

Eggs, raw with the shell. You need to mulch it up a bit, maybe in a food processor, blender, or coffee grinder. You may want to go easy on the amount of egg shells you do give her cause it's not balanced in calcium to potasium -- very critical in a puppies growth.

Are those salmon patties cooked? Pacific salmon can contain some kind of flukes which are very harmful to dogs. Good idea is to feed cooked or canned fish only once a week.

I add a couple of eggs to the veg glop...otherwise I just break one over the food once or twice a week. I don't bother giving them the shell - they are getting quite enough calcium as it is - and the shell isn't well processed :p unless it is pulverised anyhow.

Apart form the entertainment value of watching a dog figuring out how to get into an egg, all it does is leave a mess since mine don't eat the shells.

the salmon patties aren't from pacific... they are from alaska, and they are called salmon burgers (just read the package again)...

Are they cooked? I don't like to take any chances and only do feed cooked salmon. We get farm raised salmon here and it is great. I do them up on the BBQ and always make a little extra for leftovers. Mmmmm!

Yes, I would. It is much better to be safe. If the dog did get one of those flukes, I'm not even sure a vet would think of treating for it. They seem to like the cooked salmon just as well and it's easier to feed IMO.

It took Maddie at that age 5 nanoseconds to eat a wing... At 3 months she choked on a dog treat (and nearly died)... when we did x-rays to see what she choked on (and to check her lungs) they showed a whole chicken wing in her stomach (not the source of the choking)... I wish she'd slow down a bit when she inhales her food.

Just got my monthly shipment of raw meat today (thru a co-op) and got chicken feet for the 1st time.. the dogs love them... it's a fun little snack for them and it's very funny to see the chicken toes hanging out of their mouths.

I give both my dogs raw eggs. Athena an adult so I crack it for her and give her shell and all.

Disel is only 14 weeks, so for right now he only gets yolk and white. No shells until he is done growing...he does not need the extra calcium.

Along those lines, what about RAW bones and puppies? What are the guidelines with that? I mean bones have calcium and phosphorus in them. How do RAW people handle that?

The recommended guidelines (according to Billinghurst, Schultze, Lonsdale et al) for puppy diet is exactly the same as adult diet...when you break it down it's about 20-25% bone.

Lol laurlitt....mine get raw chicken feet also. When the checkout girl asked what I did with the chicken feet (I buy large packages) I told her I deep fry them and serve them as snacks. She went a lovely shade of green!! LOL...I never did tell her the truth.:p :D

I love to give the dogs their chicken feet snacks when company comes over. The looks on their faces is priceless.:D

HAHA! Last summer we had to board one of the dogs with my vet. I included a bag of chicken feet for treats. They STILL talk about that!

I get mine from a Chinese market. I haven't had the heart to tell them I feed them to the dogs, the little old lady there is tickled pink that I'm actually cooking them, and she's given me recipes and everything.

It makes me sick to my tummy thinking about me actually eating these things... especially b/c of those toe nails!
