How to find tick

I took my girl to the park today for a nice long walk. Came home and she was laying by me and I felt with my hand a little bump on her leg. I looked carefully and found a tick. I tried to memorize the spot and ran upstairs to get twizers. When I got it I had to search her for about 10 min to find that tick. I knew the spot so it was about 10" radius. Only because I knew for sure it's there I found it. She is on Frontline Plus, so I don't know what this tick was thinking about trying to bite her:) My question is - Do you know any tricks how to find tick on a dog. I will need to inspect her every time we come back from this park. Naturally with her black thick coat it's almost impossible to find it. How do you do it? May be put more Frontline?

In the highest pitched voice you can muster,, say heeeeeeere ticky ticky tick*L* j/k. I run My hands all over Dash stroking her hair in the opposite direction that the hair grows, and pay extra careful attention when she is having a bath, with the hair wet its much easier to spot them, I'd say the frontline needs a boost.:) there is another thread on the icky tick subjectticks

LOL! :D We need to invent something like luminol that we can dust the dog with and the tick will light up fluorescent green!

Honestly, they can be hard to find because they're pretty flat before they start dining. Maybe going over every square inch of your dog with a flea comb when you get home?

First of all, when you find one, simply pull it off! Grasp it right where it is attached, pluck it off and drop it in a small jar of alcohol kept just for that purpose. You are more likely to pinch the dog than get the tick with tweezers.

Main places to check. Between the toes, armpits, neck area and ears (don't forget that little pocket on the ear flap).

I use a flea comb

I found a couple with a flea comb but that doesn't do any good if the ticks are under the arms or toes , so check those hidden spots often. It is very very bad here where we live this year . In 2 days I took 10 ticks off of Czar, talking about freaking out, 2 have already attached themselves but haden't started sucking yet, thank God. Czar has the Preventick Plus, I can hardly believe it this year already.

As for how to remove them, I much rather prefer my fingers, you can get a much better grip on it:) . The only thing you can do is check often and hope for the best.

Thank you guys. I am getting a flea comb and will check all those places ticks can hide in. I was not even checking dogs after walk because of my trust in Frontline Plus. It's just accidentely I found this tick. So what's the point of Frontline if ticks get in anyway? I don't think I can take tick out with my fingers, may be with a tissue or something like that. Thanks again.

First off, why do you have the jar with alcohol? Is it to just kill the tick or does everyone keep tick collections but me?
I never even thought of checking between the toes. Will do from now on. Ticks love the inside ear flap and behind the ear. Earlier this year I got at least 15 out from the inside of Fizbin's ear flap. He had more then 50 on him. I can't pull them off with my hands- when I try I don't get the head. I like this little plastic spoon thing with a V groove. It works like the claw end of a hammer, and then twist.

You'll get use to it

yuki, I was the same way at one time as far as not be able to take a tick off with my fingers . I use to always ask my husband till one day he was at work and I couldn't find a tweezer so I did it with my fingers and have ever since:D . If ticks are that bad in your area then you must check her each time she's been outside. Don't rely on Frontline or any other preventative as far as that goes. I use, like I said Preventic Plus and I am rather disappointed to have found now 10 ticks over a period of 2 days . That scares me half to death bc we already went through the lyme thing:( . Today I took the flea comb through him several times and got 2 and then also found one on the kitchen floor but this year is 10 times worse then last year:( . All you can do is check your dog often and remember those warm places where they hide.

Make sure you familarize yourself with knowing the symptoms of lyme.

No, I don't collect the ticks, but dropping them in alcohol kills them dead instead of crushing them with your fingernail, or trying to burn them, - don't drop them in the toilet, they can come out through the sewer lines........... I like really dead... They are too small to shoot

Yuki, I was the same as you first time I found a tick on Sparkle. Freaked out, danced around the living room, didn't want to touch it. But by about my 5th tick, I was used to it. Now it's no problem at all. Just pull the little f***er out and drown him in bleach.

What happens if you are home alone (and deathly afraid of bugs) and your dog has a tick. Any way to get them off without having to touch them at all (tweezers, kleenex-cant do it!) I can't even see one with out spazzing!

I actually didn't put tick in bleach or alcohol. It was a beautiful ceremony of burning it right above the toilet. Dogs were really fascinated. I guess when I will have a lot of them, I will have to drown them. I still don't understand how you brave people can touch it with fingers. It was still moving its feet. Thank for all your replies.
