Weight at 6 months...

Hi everyone---

We took Julius to the vet last Thursday & had him weighed. He was almost 54 lbs. I was just wondering what your male puppies weighed at six months of age (Julius will be 6 months on Tuesday. Where does time go???). I know that it just depends on the dog as far as weight goes. He's a healthy puppy. I can't see his ribs but can feel them easily. I was just wondering what your male puppies weighed at six months of age.....

Thanks!
Brooke

The weight of the dog is really an individual thing. The fact that you can't see his ribs but you can feel them is good. Don't forget if the pup is too heavy that adds a lot of stress to those growing bones.

But to answer your questions, around 60 pounds for a six month old male is a good weight, assuming he's got the bone to support it.

Well our obedience trainer told us that he looked a tad bit underweight to her. She said not A LOT underweight....just a bit. I've read on this board many times that it's not a bad thing to keep your growing dog a bit underweight so as not to put undue stress on the bones. We're not trying to keep him underweight & I really don't think he is. He's just a puppy & VERY active. He gets two thirty minute walks a day (less if he seems tired) & frisbee & chasing the tennis ball out in the yard all through the day. We'll be posting pictures of Julius in the Chit Chat Corner soon (hopefully today) once I get done editing them & you guys can take a look for yourselves....

Thanks!!!
Brooke

Can't wait to see the pictures Brooke! I have seen here postings on weight and if I remember this correctly, forgive me if I am off, it has been said 8 to 12 # a month is a good rule of thumb. That seems to be true based on what we are seeing with our boy so far. And we like you are seeing him stay where you can feel his ribs, without looking skinny.

I've heard (probably another old wives' tale) that a dog's weight at 5 months is half of its adult weight. Anyone know about that?

Zeus at 18.5 weeks

Zeus made a visit to the Vet and weighed 48 pounds at 18.5 weeks. Our vet indicated that he looked ideal for his build, and bone structure.

We have come to the conclusion that Julius is also the right weight for his build.

Thanks!
