Abady

can someone tell me why this food cost $99 for a 35lb bag?

Does this food talk? Is it the caviar (sp) of dog food?

I'd never heard of it before, but I just looked on Waggintails, and they sell it for $60 for 35 lbs.

State-of-the-Art Ingredients?

Ingredients:
Poultry By-Products Meal, Menhaden Fish Meal, Cornmeal, Beef Fat, Lamb and Mutton Fat, Kibbled Yellow Corn Chunks, Cold Pressed Safflower Oil, Flaxseed Oil, Salt, Undefatted Beef Liver, Egg Albumen, Dehydrated Carrots, Whole Dried Eggs, Whey Protein Concentrate, Wheat Germ Oil, Menhaden Fish Fat, plus essential vitamins and minerals.

Corn and by-products? There are much better foods out there for lower prices. :)

If you're looking to buy from the website that was posted, the dollars are Canadian. The currency exchange is terrible for Canada.

99 Canadian = 68 American

That still seems pretty steep!

Solid Gold is better IMO, and has no by-products or corn. It costs about $40 for 33 lbs.

I cannot believe the prices of dog food in the US!!!

A decent dog food here costs around $18 per 8kg. Which works out to 17 lbs for $8 US!!

Decent? Or superpremium? (Curious, not being argumentative.:))
I could buy my dogs what I consider "Decent" or "Adequate" for about $23 for #40, but I will only buy kibble with no by-products, fillers or preservatives and made with human grade ingredients. That costs extra but IMO, well worth it.:D

I hear that 'Roos are used quite a bit in dog food over there. Is it true?

Yep, kangaroo is quite popular.
It's quite a tough meat but has extremely low fat. It's the leanest red meat you can get as far as I'm aware.
It needs to be minced though and cooked rare as it is tough when cooked well done.

You can buy Roo mince for around $2-4 aussie dollars per 1 kilogram. Which works out to $1-2US per 2.2 lbs.

By the way, what are some of the brands of dog kibble to stay away from?

That's tough since I don't know what you've got in the "LDU".;)

I'll give you a few of the REALLY BADS:
Kibbles 'n' Bits (and anything they make)
Atta Boy (and anything they make)
Alpo (")
Iams/Eukanuba (Ok, not Really as bad as Kibbles 'n' Bits but I won't feed it.)
Purina Dog Chow (I hear Purina ONE is OK, but I don't like anything purina makes...)

On my short "Good List".
Canidae
Solid Gold
Innova
California Natural
NutroMax (Not really good, but OK)

That's all my tiny brain can think of at the moment...Perhaps someone could add to the lists...

A few years ago our lab developed adult-onset megaesophagus, and we had a nasty time trying to keep him fed. He would have required four cans of food daily. We learned about Abady High Maintenance and Stress, and used it with the canned for a period of time. It's granulated....it looks like potting soil. We mixed it with the canned in order for Jake to get the proper amount of nutrition and calories. For our purpose, it was great. I understand it's very popular in the north, where Robert Abady is a respected breeder. But I can't imagine feeding it under normal circumstances.

For those of you that study nutrition though, it's worth a few bucks to order a 5 lb. box. It's about the size of a large shoe box, and three sides are covered with a paste-on label, of which every single inch is covered by Mr. Abady's very wordy treatise on canine nutrition. Consider it an addition to your library. It makes for very interesting reading.;)

A lot of people on this board recommend feeding by products to dogs "(liver, green tripe, hearts, kidneys, etc) So i don't think by products are inherently bad.

Adaby's big claim to fame is that they cook each set of ingredients seperatley and at different temperatures and for different times and blend it all at the end. Thats why its granulated. They claim that a dog lie a rott only needs 2 cups a day of their food.

What good is human grade protein or vegtable ingredients if you cook all the nutrition out of it?

I have not purchased this yet, but am researching it. There have been studies on how good this food is and how the dogs are healthier. I think the monks of New Skete did one.

Its important to have an open mind.

The problem wth the "studies" showing dogs are healthier on Abady is that they are all put out by Abady itself. What really bugs me about this company is the way they print pseudo-scientific giberish on their full page ads that sounds impressive but means nothing. A few years ago they had an ad running that had the statement : "the gastrocnemius muscle in calorie deprived rats was found to be 45% smaller than in well-nourished controls" in the text. In plain english, this means "starved rats are skinny". It had nothing to do with their dog food, but it sounded good, and "proved" that their superior nutrition would keep your dog healthy. They could have the best food in the world, and I wouldn't buy it due to my disgust with their deceptive advertizing methods.
