Purina Dog Chow (I hear Purina ONE is OK, but I don't like anything purina makes...)
I will also add "Old Roy" to your bad list...it is horrible!

Up until this thread I had never heard of Abady....I think that I'll stick to my Canidae. ;)

A few years ago they had an ad running that had the statement : "the gastrocnemius muscle in calorie deprived rats was found to be 45% smaller than in well-nourished controls" in the text. In plain english, this means "starved rats are skinny". It had nothing to do with their dog food, but it sounded good, and "proved" that their superior nutrition would keep your dog healthy. They could have the best food in the world, and I wouldn't buy it due to my disgust with their deceptive advertizing methods.

Mary,

Thanks for your opinions on this board. You are in my opinion very credible. I assume that the DVM in your handle means you are a vet.

Your point is well taken and like I said, I am not convinced yet about this food.

I just dont like it when people read a label and dismiss it based on criteria that seem cliche at times in the dog world (it has by products, it has corn, etc). I just feel that people should be a tad bit more open minded at times. After all, the BARF diet has tons of "by products" and I have read arguments that if your dog is not ellergic to corn and if its processed a certain way, its a good source of carbs. Of course I know this is all debatable

Anyway, what do you think about all the stuff they print about the lenolenic acid?

A perfect example of their misleading advertising is the paragraph:

"Progressive retinal atrophy and other eye disorders, as well as thyroid, kidney, malformations of the brain and heart are becoming increasingly more common in dogs. Linolenic acid is vital for the formation, maintenance and function of these organs."

Linolenic acid may be essential to the health of all those organs, but he is implying that a linolenic acid deficiency causes the diseases mentioned in the previous sentence and there is absolutely no scientific data to substantiate this assumption. Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) is an inherited eye disease, if it actually is becoming more common, it's because of poor breeding practices.

He also places a lot of emphasis on the inferiority of other protein sources to Menhaden fish meal. Think about it. If fish meal was so essential to the dog's nutrition, the canine species would have evolved with fins instead of fur.

I'm sure Abady is a quality food, but their claims of superiority are overblown, and not based on any real scientific facts.

Chuss: I think I will have to move to Adelaide----

In Melbourne I pay $88.00 for a 15kg bag of Nutrience.. I am not sure of the conversion but its around $160.00 USA dollars for what? about 30lb??

That is a super premium food though.

I use very little of it though because my dogs are fed BARF 90% of the time.

Again, I am so grateful that you are on this board and provide information (that is backed up from a credible source...A VET!)

I tend to now agree with you. It may be a great food, but I am skeptical about a company that manipulates information to make it seem like fact when if fact its just advertising. I feel that a quality COMPANY that makes a quality food doesnt need to do this.

I also did notice that all the "studies" are all done by Dr. Abady. I have heard of others, but I can't find any. Reminds me of the studies on nicotine in cigarettes and how its not addictive done by the Tobacco companies.

Most of the by-products that are used in dog foods are not what you have listed. Most are things like the beaks, feathers, feet, hooves, etc. Things that have no nutritional value what-so-ever. That is why most stay away from foods that list by-products in their ingredients.
