glucosamine supplement

Does anyone give their older dogs a glucosmine supplement? How much and do you give human grade or do you get it from the vet? Our vet mentioned it to us a few months ago for our 7 year old female as she is starting to creak when she gets up in the morning. So far she doesn't act like anything I can just hear the creaking. She does get a supplement in her food ( She is on Go).

Thanks,
Rachel

YES. :)
Both my 80lb Nottweiler (very old) and my younger dog with elbow dysplasia - who went from pronounced limping and looking at arthroscopic surgery, to zero, nada, limping. And the only thing we changed was to start daily supplements.

Human grade (grocery store brand) G - 1500mg, C - 1200mg. I feed it daily, usually in the morning.

nb: Buffered aspirin, given with food, can be just as effective as rx meds like Etogesic or Rimadyl. Plus a ton cheaper & no serious side effects. That's from an ortho specialist, and my SO who is a doctor. Just FIY.

And of course you want her really lean! That also makes a big, big difference.

My girl isn't old but she had a chipped bone in her elbow which had to be removed. Even after the procedure she still wasn't doing well and I put her on an adult dose of human grade MSN and sharkcartlidge along with a K9 glucosamine/condroiton combo capsule. All this along with a mostly raw diet has done wonders for her. In your case I would definately try using the MSN for 30 days and see how it does for her.

I give mine 500 mg of Glucosamine. I could only find it is 1000mg capsules though. So I pop open the capsule and one dog gets 1/2, the other dog gets the rest. Give it once a day.

I give my dysplastic 8 year old 1500 mg Glucosomine 1200mg Chondroitin Sulfate once a day, human brand. To this I add extra Vit C and Alfalfa. This mixture has kept her pretty much pain free without any limping. She also has elbow dysplasia.

How much do you pay for it (ie how many mg / tabs)? I'm just doing some price shopping.

my choice..

I really like K9 Liquid Health from Tenaja. It's great stuff. Eighty bucks for a gallon (I think) delivered. High Glucosomine and Chondroitin content.

Funnily enough, I've just been doing some price comparison shopping for gluco/chon for my mom. The cheapest I found were at Costco:

Webber brand 200 tablets (500 mg gluco/400 mg chon) $28.59

Kirkfield (Costco's own brand) 210 tablets (500 gluco/400 chon/400 MSM) $29.99

If there isn't a Costco near you, but you can find an S&H Health Food store, they also have excellent prices on supplements.

I got 120 1000mg capsules from Wal Mart for less than $8.00. My vet told me, though, not to give more than 800mg a day. He said any higher than that hadn't been proven to be any more effective. So I split the caps between the 2 pups.

Maybe I am a sucker but my vet told me that Cosequin was worth the extra money - Its mega bucks though $75 for 120 tablets...and the starting dose is 3tabs a day...Bella has only been on this for 2.5 weeks so it remains to be seen if it helps or not...

I use the gluco/contd - human pills I get at the local drug store... once a day with her morning meal and 1 asprin. It has made all the difference to Neemo. She now chases (not really chase, just kind of runs after her for short spurts) Roxy around where before she could not be bothered. She could not take her evening walk. She would sit down in the park and be unable to move. Neemo will be 8 years old in June. She has had hip problems since birth.

My furbaby has a plate in her leg, she limped really badly (also her one leg is shorter than the other) and I was told she would always limp.. I put her on 1,000 mg glucosamine and 800 chondroitin sulfate (cosco brand) 800 mg vit e and 2,000 mg salmon oil. You would not believe the difference that I saw in one week with my baby. Everyone has commented how well she is running and doesn't seem to have any leg problems at all....also when she first came home, she would always hold the right leg off the floor, NOT ANY MORE.:D :)

Wow Carolines!!

Kirkfield (Costco's own brand) 210 tablets (500 gluco/400 chon/400 MSM) $29.99

That's a great price!! :D I was looking in a health food store and they wanted the same for only 60 tabs!! :p That's it, I'm going to Costco! ;)

Please keep in mind sable375, we're Canadians so our prices are a little different (I think we're only getting 65 cents to your dollar).

I used to buy a lot of Gloucosomine and Chondroitin supplement from COSTCO, until I was educated by someone to read this website concerning potency. Therefore, please read and understand what you are paying for, as mg is not the only measurement of what you are paying.
